2 The basic sources of pollution of the Black sea are: From the rivers, which flow into the sea, From air during rain and without rain, The sources are on the surface of the sea (ships), in the volume and at the bottom of the sea.

3 Pollution of the Black sea through the rivers Unpurified drains of infectious hospitals and other medical institutions; Application in agriculture of heightened doses of fertilizers and manure, which get into rivers during the rain. Unpurified domestic waste; Dumps, where are found toxic substances, for example lead and plumbous materials (used accumulators); Industrial waste from enterprises without corresponding purification and at accidents.

5 Solution of the problem: Unpurified drains of infectious hospitals and other medical institutions The new technology, which is based on usage of: 1.Filters 2.Membranes 3.Ozone -Institute of Inorganic Chemistry and Electrochemistry of Georgian Academy of Sciences -Institute of Membranes

7 The reason of existence of the problem: Application in agriculture of heightened doses of fertilizers and manure, which get into rivers during the rain. Application of excessive quantity of fertilizer Absence of quality control of agricultural production Cutting down of forests for obtaining of fire wood (i t results in soil erosion) Inclined plane of agricultural land areas (54% of total agricultural areas has angle > 30º)

8 Solution of the problem: Application in agriculture of heightened doses of fertilizers and manure, which get into rivers during the rain. The new technology, which is based on usage of worms “Californian red” It is possible to receive 100 kgs of protein and 600 kgs of biohumus from one ton of manure - LTD “Eco-progress” - LTD “Elkana”

Solution of the problem: Mathematical calculations of distribution of impurities on surface and in volume of the Black Sea. - Institute of Geophysics of Georgian Academy of Sciences Sorbents for absorption of oil spilled on the water surface Investigation of the problem. Possibility of application of H 2 S close to sources where concentration of H 2 S is high

24 The sources are on the surface of the sea (ships), in the volume and at the bottom of the sea. Solution of the problem: Technology for obtaining of foam plastic having high sorption properties is developed (sorption capacity is from 2 up to 10 g/g, foam plastic is remarkable for cheapness, simplicity of production). By preliminary laboratory investigations extent of purification reaches almost 100%. Proposed sorbents may be regenerated up to 10 cycles. Used sorbents may be used in building and production of asphalt - Institute of Physical and Organic Chemistry of Georgian Academy of Sciences

26 STCU GR85 Project: Design of Amorphous Manganese Oxide Based Composite Materials for Wastewater Purification Aims of the project: Optimal design of composite amorphous manganese oxide based materials with prescribed absorption properties, and Employment of these materials in (i)Water management; (ii)Energy production; (iii)Catalysis.

27 STCU GR85 Project: Design of Amorphous Manganese Oxide Based Composite Materials for Wastewater Purification Water management: Sorption of 90 Sr and 235 U as major radiotracer pollutants from drinkable water and wastewater; Possible use of sorbents for sorption of other harmful cations (Cu 2+, Cd 2+, etc.).

29 STCU GR85 Project: Design of Amorphous Manganese Oxide Based Composite Materials for Wastewater Purification Water management Substitution of the H + ions of surface hydroxyl groups by Sr 2+ cations could be clearly uncovered by means of differential infrared spectroscopy.

30 STCU GR85 Project: Design of Amorphous Manganese Oxide Based Composite Materials for Wastewater Purification Water management The distribution coeffic- ients in neutral and acidic media are better than for the best commercially available sorbents; The product is cheaper than the best commercially available sorbents; Utilization of used sorbents can be performed by means of calcination at 400  C.

31 STCU GR85 Project: Design of Amorphous Manganese Oxide Based Composite Materials for Wastewater Purification Other significant results An ageing effect (an increase of the sorption capacity upon storage) has been discovered, which is caused by dehydration of samples and rearrangement of remaining hydroxyl groups; Theoretical predictions and experimental proofs of the role of raw materials in the properties of materials obtained; Theoretical models of the process of physical and chemical adsorption on the surface of an amorphous solid.
