1 GIS in Denmark Geographical Information System used in the upper secondary school for environmental teaching.

2

3 In 2002 the GLOBE school Odense Katedralskole got a professional GIS system and the environmental data of the county of Funen

4 Orthophoto of Odense Katedralskole

5 Pedagogical observation: Using actual local maps, ortho-photos, real environmental data and modern technology, we get a magnificent eye-opener when teaching science

6

7 Technical info: A pc-projector in the classroom. A pc-projector in the classroom. 6 computers in the classroom. 6 computers in the classroom. PC-cap: 512 MB RAM, 40 GB harddisk. Data: 18 GB (maps, orthophotos, envir. data). 10 minutes of instructions to start off the students. 10 minutes of instructions to start off the students.

8 In order to start you write your address or the locality you want to study.

9

10 From the address or locality name the computer will automatically find the correct map.

11

12 A few clicks and the student will get the orthophoto covering the same area.

13

14.. or an enlargement with the registration number as new background map.

15

16 To get the environmental data of the study area, mark the area on the map.

17

18 The computer will now be searching through all the public data, and in 30 sec. will show this map and a palette of topics as a result:

19

20 For each click a new theme or topic will be shown on the map. Here you see the 55 decibel corridor of traffic noise.

21

22..or a map of polluted areas. Here is the soil around a gas station:

23

24..but what about the groundwater for drinking ? Is this area the source area for groundwater ?

25

26 Unfortunately ”YES” ! What now ? We will find out what sort of soil we have under the gas station !

27

28 It is silt !! (In fact the polluted soil and the old corroded tanks at the gas station were moved shortly afterwards).

29 In the old days before the bulldozers the contours of the landscape were more important. Let us take a look at the map from 120 years ago !

30

31 … and an overview of: - The contour map :

32

33 - The geological map:

34

35 and - The landscape map:

36

37 To each map and topic a detailed description is available to the student.

38

39 The GLOBE WMS-server. Finally we can use our GIS-program to get into contact with the GLOBE Web Map Service and see fx the max. temp. map

40

41

42..or we can go to ”Geoscience Australia Map Server” to create a map composed of the thematic maps: 1. Coastline and State Borders 2. Geology, Rock Units 3. The Nickel Occurences.

43

44 Using… actual local maps actual local maps ortho-photos ortho-photos real environmental data real environmental data and modern technology, and modern technology, we get a magnificent eye-opener in teaching science.

45 Let us collaborate through the international GLOBEnetwork
