Introduction Top Ranking Universities Criteria – THES Criteria – QS Criteria Journal Ranking Criteria

THES Top Ranking University: Methodology, 2012 Research: volume, income and reputation (30 %) Citations: research influence (30 %) Teaching: the learning environment (30 %) International outlook: people and research (7.5%) Industry income: innovation (2.5 %).

Research: volume, income and reputation (30%) We count the number of papers published in the academic journals indexed by Thomson Reuters per academic staff member to give a clear picture of each institution's ability to get papers published in quality peer-reviewed journals. This category also looks at university research income, scaled against staff numbers

Citations: research influence (30 %) In this indicator, we examine a university's research influence by capturing the number of times its published work is cited by scholars around the world.

The rankings are, for the third year, led by MIT which increased year-on- year citations per faculty by 14%. Imperial College also reported a 14% increase in this metric compared to 11% by Cambridge and 2% by Harvard. The average increase in this dimension amongst the top 10 was 7%. Caltech remains the world’s top university for research citations. All the top ten institutions achieve excellence in academic reputation, employer reputation, student faculty ratio or measures of international faculty and students. The performance of Imperial College in citations per faculty has helped it become the biggest climber in the top 10, leapfrogging Harvard, UCL and Oxford to rank second equal in the world, tied with University of Cambridge. A total of 31 countries are represented in the top 200; where the US is the dominant nation, with 51 institutions, ahead of the UK (29), Germany (13), the Netherlands (11), Canada (10), Japan (10) and Australia (8). QS WUR 2014

In academic publishing, a scientific journal is aacademic publishing periodical publication intended to further the progressperiodical publication of science, usually by reporting new research.scienceresearch There are thousands of academic and scientific journals in publication (> 23,000), and many more have been published at various points in the past. Journal Ranking

Journal ranking is widely used in academic circles in the evaluation of an academic journal’s impact and quality. Journal rankings are intended to reflect the place of a journal within its field, the relative difficulty of being published in that journal, and the prestige associated with it. They have been recently introduced as official research evaluation tools in some countries such as Norway, Australia and France. Usually, it is based on indexes/abstracts given by ISI, SCOPUS, DBLP, Google, etc.

What is ISI ISI is the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) was founded by Eugene Garfield in 1960.

ISI Serves ISI offered bibliographic database services and its specialty is on citation indexing and analysis. Covering thousands of academic journals, including a continuation of its longtime print-based indexing service the, Science Citation Index (SCI),Science Citation Index Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), andSocial Sciences Citation Index Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI).Arts and Humanities Citation Index All of these are available via ISI's Web of Knowledge (part of web of Science) database service.

(Information Science Institute, ISI). The evaluation process consists of evaluation of many criteria such as, - Basic Journal Publishing Standards (including Timeliness of publication, adherence to International Editorial Conventions, - English Language Bibliographic Information (including English article titles, keywords, author abstracts, and cited references.) - ISI also examines the journal's Editorial Content, the International Diversity of it authors and editors. Citation Analysis using ISI data is applied to determine the journal's citation history and/or - the citation history of its authors and editors. Journal Selection Criteria

The ISI also publishes the annual Journal Citation Reports which list an impact factor for each of the journals that it tracks.Journal Citation Reportsimpact factor The ISI also publishes a list of highly cited researchers, one of the factors included in the Academic Ranking of World Universitieshighly cited researchersAcademic Ranking of World Universities

Impact Factor Definition The JCR provides quantitative tools for ranking, evaluating, categorizing, and comparing journals. The impact factor is one of these; it is a measure of the frequency with which the "average article" in a journal has been cited in a particular year or period. The annual JCR impact factor is a ratio between citations and recent citable items published. Thus, the impact factor of a journal is calculated by dividing the number of current year citations to the source items published in that journal during the previous two years. Calculation for journal impact factor. A= total cites in 1992 B= 1992 cites to articles published in (this is a subset of A) C= number of articles published in D= B/C = 1992 impact factor
