O. Urinary System Farmers who sold their kidneys show their scars on Oct. 17 in Jandala, Pakistan. Debt and poverty is driving hundreds of Pakistanis to sell their own kidneys for cash.
Urinary System Functions of 1. Maintain water balance 2. Balance blood pH 3. To remove metabolic wastes 4. Maintain salt balance
Metabolic Wastes Are nitrogenous (N) compounds Come from the breakdown of proteins and nucleic acids Ammonia comes from the DEAMINATION of amino groups from amino acids & is very toxic NH 3 is converted to urea in the liver
Main parts of: Kidneys (2) – bean shaped organ –Renal artery carries blood to – renal vein carries blood away Function - makes urine
Ureters (2) – tubes that carry urine away from kidney and connect to the bladder –Urine moved by peristalsis Function – carry urine
Bladder – hold up to 600 mL of urine Stores urine Has stretch receptors Function – stores urine
Urethra – connects bladder to external opening Function - Carries urine from bladder to external –Male – travels through the penis (same exit as sperm) –Female – shorter – ventral to vagina – is separate from birth canal
Kidneys – looking at the macro Concave side of kidney connected to blood vessels and ureter 3 Regions –1. Renal Cortex – outer granulated layer –2. Renal Medulla – middle region –3. Renal Pelvis – central space of kidney where urine collects
