14 Harvard University and Earning by Learning’s Collaboration Thanks to a grant from the Smith Richardson Foundation, Dr. Roland Fryer and his team in the Economics Department at Harvard University will evaluate the Earning by Learning. The study will look at the effect of monetary incentives on the amount of student reading. Dr. Fryer will also evaluate the effect of incentives on student reading ability, Dr. Fryer talks about the implications of the Harvard study with Earning by Learning. “The achievement gap is perhaps America’s most pressing domestic concern. Many elaborate attempts have been made to close the gap, with little success. We propose to build on and scientifically estimate the intuition educators and parents have had for centuries-that incentives work. Our experiment presents a promising and little explored avenue to combat the racial achievement gap by providing small tangible incentives to children for them to learn behavior that are in their long-term best interest.”
