2 Everything is Naked * H. Aksu, U. Candan, M.N. Cankaya * Summer 2011, Istanbul * Page 2 Introduction – Where we come from? The world is a place worthwhile to live. People as a whole have achieved this. Humanity has shown itself capable of benefiting from the novelties it has developed. Change is ever happening. Humanity has changed continuously, developed continuously, and reinvented itself continuously. Mankind is a social creature and one of its basic needs is communication. Communication has existed since the dawn of mankind. The main purpose of communication remains the same but its form has changed. The means of communication in particular have changed, developed and expanded. The quantity of communication has grown. The desire of humanity to communicate is ever greater. The variety of communication has grown in parallel with population expansion. Its usage has become ever easier. Also, communication has constantly spread wider and become cheaper. We don’t agree with the saying, “The only thing that does not change is change itself”. Even change itself is subject to change. When we take a look at the history of mankind we see that the pace of life and change have spiraled dizzyingly. This trend will continue. The spread and cheapening of communication has contributed to the development of humanity. In fact, it has contributed to spread information, enhance of freedom and accelerate development. Where we stand today, the collective intelligence of humanity is victorious and has made correct decisions in favor of the entire human race. This will continue.

In the beginning, humanity produced basic goods, but then shifted to more virtual goods and services, especially information. Cheaper and more widespread communication has played a significant part in this. It facilitates more varied opportunities to larger masses. It has socialized development. We urgently need common means of communication and technological development in these days, when we are faced with major social and economic problems. As human beings we will face these threads together. We will search and find the solutions. We will implement those solutions rapidly. Mass and global means of communication will enable the participation of all, and the provision of solutions to everybody. The world needs the Internet. Mankind needs the Internet. What we have seen until today is just the beginning. We will see important developments, rapid and vast expansion in the near future. Thanks to this expansion humanity will become even further enlightened. The future will be brighter for all. The book you are holding in your hands is about those days to come.

Thanks to the Internet. Standard communication will be free in the future, and communication between devices we don’t even know of yet will be transparent and free as well. In his work The Wisdom of Crowds James Surowiecki says, “In general, mankind has been clever enough to use developments in favor of humanity”. We share his opinion. Communication technologies have helped mankind as well. Thomas Malone clearly summarized this development in his book The Future of Work. Manuel Castells describes this situation in detail in his book Communication Power. He describes professionally how society and communication influence one another, and how widespread and cheaper communication technologies contribute to the democratization process.

By the way, when we think of wireless connection, the Internet has already become less visible, so it fits in with our metaphor. When we think that it is hotter, we consider that it is more up-to-date and has fresher and richer content. Again, it fits our model. Mixing services into one another, being invisible, its ability to easily penetrate anywhere, its active and energetic nature, were all concepts that we were targeting while trying to explain the future of the Internet. For this reason we liked this metaphor, and decided to compare the future of the internet with the third state of water. We hope that you incline to it, like it, and that it makes it easier for you to understand and comprehend. So what are the characteristics of the third state of matter? When we thought about where gas form is used and remembered H2O, meaning water, we came up with “vapor”. Evolving Web – States of Matter

This does not only mean individual access will be fast and seamless. More so it means that access and computing will become instantaneous. This will enable completely new ways of conducting business, politics, social interaction, commerce, education, health and everything else in daily life for individuals and organizations. Don’t we expect the internet just to work? Don’t we get impatient when we need to wait for a web site to load? This will not happen again, not only in developed parts of the world, but also very soon in all parts of the world. Because communication is a basic need and right for everybody. So it will be treated by society, economy and technology.

7 Everything is Naked * H. Aksu, U. Candan, M.N. Cankaya * Summer 2011, Istanbul * Page 7 Web 3 will be much smarter … The internet has enriched our lives. Today we rely on the internet for most of our concerns or questions. The internet and its various services provide a large variety of services, content and connectivity capabilities, never been able before on this globe. Now we are entering a stage where imagination will be the sole constraint. All ingredients are set for a major revolution. The future bares a huge potential for solving real life problems we are facing on a daily basis. Solutions for diseases, pandemics, terror, crisis, inequality, lack of democracy and many more. Still we lack the most basic need of mankind: Freedom! The progress and spread of the internet will contribute by far much more than any other technology has contributed to humanity so far in history ever.

Since a few years there are more things connected to the internet, than there are people on the planet. This number will continuously rise. And it will not just rise, but the things connected to the internet become smarter and more interactive. Not only people will collaborate, consciously and unconsciously, but also the things will «tweet» with each other and will share information. In this sense the collaboration taking place on the internet, will reach stages unthinkable of today. All finance, all media, all telecommunications, all retail, all education, most of health, most of security and military will rely on this capability. The use and the collaboration will become seamless, natural and the absolutely «default».
