2 Stafoverleg 12 mei 2005 P 2 Mankracht komende jaren De installatie van hardware in Atlas bereikt het komende jaar zijn hoogtepunt  Muon kamers geinstalleerd in Atlas rond 2006Q1  Trigger/DAQ hardware geinstalleerd in Atlas rond 2006Q2  SCT endcap geinstalleerd in Atlas rond 2006Q2 Het experiment begint te draaien in 2007  Onze verantwoordelijkheid tav de hardware projecten houden niet op bij de installatie Natuurlijk, druk op meeste technisch personeel neemt na installatie af Maar aanzienlijke onzekerheden in ‘babysitting’ van alle projecten ‘Running’ environment in Atlas echt anders dan stand-alone performance checks Essentieel om expertise en mankracht beschikbaar te houden gedurende de gehele life-time van Atlas.

Trapprogge Physics potential voor de luminosity upgrade Workshop gehouden in Februari ; volgende in Juli. CMS is ons voor – houden ook workshops over dit thema

4 Stafoverleg 12 mei 2005 P 4 LHC upgrade scenarios Always assuming collisions in two experiments Phase 0: stretch machine to its limits  Increase luminosity by factor ~2 beyond design values  Comes for free Phase 1: Increase the luminosity by order of magnitude  Upgrade of the interaction region  Upgrade various sub-detectors: the Atlas case Phase 2: Increase cm energy by factor of 2  Including the luminosity also factor of ~2. Includes upgrading the SPS with superconducting magnets to be able to inject at 1 TeV 1200 new dipoles with 15 T field (including some safety)  Preferred solution from “physics potential” point of view  Implies building complete new machine, very very many euros… SLHC

16 Stafoverleg 12 mei 2005 P 16 Gossip – Nikhef R&D Can Gossip be a realistic alternative for ID/pixel area at SLHC?  Gossip: Generate charge signal in gas instead of Si (e-/ions versus e-/holes) Amplify # electrons in gas (electron avalanche versus FET preamps)  Then: No radiation damage in depletion layer or pixel preamp FETs No power dissipation of preamps No detector bias current CMOS pixel array Micromegas (InGrid) Drift gap: 1 mm Max drift time: 16 ns MIP CMOS pixel chip Cathode foil RO chips available from CMS Demo working in terms of months?  Possible showstoppers Aging HV breakdown Detector R&D group

17 Stafoverleg 12 mei 2005 P 17 Muon systeem - MDT Upgrade issues  No major redesign of muon spectrometer expected Possible detoriation of position resolution from rate effects Wait until experience gained from running LHC Trigger rates seem to be acceptable even at Estimated hit rate at L=10 34 cm -2 s -1

18 Stafoverleg 12 mei 2005 P 18 Muon system New ideas for the MDT  Read-out on two sides of the MDT Nikhef twin-tube project is nice start Twin tubes being prototyped in cosmic ray setup now Promising results – paper being written Option for SLHC? Problem of occupancy.  Light weighted, new MDT chambers inside muon spectrometer Strategic position for hermiticity, occupancy and efficiencies? Extra m2 in forward region?  Shielding Dedicated shielding for muon spectrometer Expected hit rate ~ Hz cm-2 Degradation due to space charge

19 Stafoverleg 12 mei 2005 P 19 TDAQ Trigger and DAQ system depends crucially on parameters of upgraded detectors  LVL1 trigger Tight coupling to bunch crossing period Consider operation at multiple frequencies  HLV/DAQ Likely to have higher bandwidth demands  TDAQ will profit from further technology advances Integrated circuits Commodity computing and network E.g. upgrade MROD (NIKHEF responsibility)  With increased rates can read-out less MDT chambers/MROD Install extra MROD R&D on faster MROD Benefit new technologies? More copies of current model?

20 Stafoverleg 12 mei 2005 P 20 Conclusions We are committed to our hardware projects throughout the lifetime of Atlas Atlas upgrades still in preliminary phase  SLHC scenario not yet known  No clear target for upgrade studies  Certainly no realistic time schedule: 2012 realistic? Or 2015? later? First Atlas upgrade is pixel b-layer (~2012)  Also without LHC upgrade When is the right time to step into big upgrade projects?

21 Stafoverleg 12 mei 2005 P 21 Conclusions Required modifications for operation of SLHC (10 35 cm -2 s -1 )  Major re-design of the ID TRT replaced by SCT type SCT long strips replaced by short strips Pixel tracker need new technologies Gossip as a very interesting Nikhef input?  Limited upgrade of Calorimeters  Muon system maybe reasonable well Redesign and rebuilding MDT Additional MROD Shielding  Lot of engineering work of materials, shielding, global services Most straightforward but require money Access for repair is getting really hard  robotica?
