P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Quick review: Define Natural Selection: Those who make a better fit to the environment survive and reproduce.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Can you explain the answer to the following questions? 1.Why do you like sweets? 2.Why has obesity become a recent problem? 3.Why are some people lactose intolerant?

4. Why are some people more likely to have sickle cell disease than other groups? 5. Why do some people have blue eyes? P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture?

6. Why do some groups of people in the world tend to have tall skinny bodies and other groups of people tend to have short stocky bodies? P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture?

So, let’s get started on today’s topic… Is race an aspect of culture? P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture?

First of all we must consider “What is Culture?” P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture?

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Humans are the only organisms in the world that have culture. Many people argue that culture is the defining trait between humans and animals.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? So, what is this “culture” that only humans have? What is culture?

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Definition of culture: Choices that (groups of) humans have made, that have become a way of life of a group of people.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? These choices are often in response to natural selection/geographic pressures. We will get more into the definition of culture in the next lecture (part III).

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? For now let’s keep in mind our definition of culture as we learn about how the races of the world came about. Then we can see if “race” fits our definition of “culture.”

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? If it does fit our definition of culture then we can say that race is an aspect of culture. If it does not fit then we will have to say race is not an aspect of culture.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? So let’s begin...

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? When Christopher Columbus discovered the “New World” how is it that there were already people there?

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Explanation of how the world was populated. Watch this interactive video.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? How do we know the world was populated this way? How do we know we all came from Africa? Click on “Video: The Journey of Your Past” https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/science-behind/

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Question: How many years ago did the people begin living in Africa? How about South America?

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? What makes for different skin color? The body’s need for Vitamin D.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? We get Vitamin D from exposure to the sun. Dark skin lets in small amounts of Vitamin D, but in environments with a lot of sunlight dark skin allows for the proper proportion of vitamin D.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Without overexposing us to the sun’s harmful rays that can cause other problems like skin cancer.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Lighter skin allows more Vitamin D to enter. This is a good match for environments where there is less sunlight.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Question: In what section of the world does the sun shine the most? The least?

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Based on your answer above you should be able to figure out where lighter skinned people and darker skinned people would come to be in the world. Consider the clues and try to figure out the answer in your group.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Teachers explains answer

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? If that’s the case why are the people in Equador (South America right on the equator) lighter skinned than people in Central Africa?

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Hint evolution often takes tens of thousands of years or more. Consider what we learned about human migration and see if you can come up with an explanation of why people in Equador are lighter skinned than people in Central Africa.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Teacher explains why people in Equador are lighter skinned than people in Central Africa.

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Now to our original question… Is race an aspect of culture?

P art II—Is Race an Aspect of Culture? Consider the definition of culture. Consider the explanation of how race came about. Does “race” fit the definition of “culture.” Why or why not?
