3 NAAPS NAAPS 2005 Adult Placement in the UK Adult Placement is about families and family living (This also includes carers who are single people and same sex partners)

4 NAAPS NAAPS 2005 Adult Placement in the UK What is Adult Placement in the UK? o Short or long term care oFor a maximum of three adults oPlaced through and supported by an Adult Placement Scheme oBy an Adult Placement Carer approved by the Scheme

5 NAAPS NAAPS 2005 Adult Placement in the UK Adult Placement is very flexible and may include:  Accommodation with care/support in the family home of a Carer;  Day care based in or outside the home of the Carer  Respite care, with or without personal care, inside or outside the AP Carer’s home; and  Support in the community by an AP Carer acting as an extended family member

8 NAAPS NAAPS 2005 Adult Placement in the UK Who can AP help? oPeople with learning disabilities(71%) oOlder people(17%) oPeople with physical disabilities(4%) oPeople with mental health problems(8%) oYoung people with special needs moving on from the child care service oPeople with dementia or onset of Alzheimer’s oVulnerable single parents oPeople leaving hospital or people at risk of entering hospital

I picked the colour of my bedroom. I have my own key. I can have a bath when I want. I can help make the tea. I love the cat and dog. Adult Placement in the UK My boyfriend can stay I work in the local shop and get paid! My carer and I have joined the village choir

13 NAAPS NAAPS 2005 Adult Placement in the UK oFinding the right carers oMatching the person and the carers oHaving a good placement agreement oSupporting and reviewing the placement oGood communication between the scheme and the carer and person placed oRegulation by the Commission for Social Care Inspection against Regulations and National Minimum Standards (not from the EU)

14 NAAPS NAAPS 2005 Adult Placement in the UK How can Adult Placement be used for People with Alzheimer’s? oDay time support oShort breaks oLong term accommodation It is a particular advantage if the day time support or short breaks can take place in the person’ s own home so they can be in their own familiar surroundings, but only if this gives the main carer a good break

15 NAAPS NAAPS 2005 Adult Placement in the UK Adult Placement is especially beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s because: oIt is in an ordinary domestic setting oIt is in small familiar surroundings oIt provides consistency of carers oCare is individualised oThere are more opportunities to sustain personal interests oThe relationships can be interdependent- using the retained skills of the person
