WHAT IS A CLICKER? An Automated Student Response device Cordless & Portable Uses radio waves to send responses to a base which processes the response data A USB drive contains memory which runs the clicker program software and a grade book A separate remote is used by the instructor which controls the questions being presented to the class Can also advance PowerPoint slides!
CLICKERS… Why i>Clicker? CASSL funded a study on student response systems and we found that they were the most economical and practical option for our students at CRC. i>Clickers are sold at the CRC bookstore for $30 used, $40 new; Los Rios “standard” Also sold on Ebay, CL, Amazon, etc. Each takes three AAA batteries. Training programs for instructors by i>Clicker Many other companies make student response systems but they were not feasible for our needs in the social sciences department.
THE VALUE OF A “CLICKER” A way to: Engage students in any class size Evaluate personal student knowledge Avoid “hand-raising” when personal questions might lead to student embarrassment Take informal attendance Save all of this valuable data for future use
USE YOUR CLICKER! Is your clicker turned on? Yes = A No = B
CHECK YOUR KNOWLEDGE Which of the following is the current president of CRC? C A B D
WHAT DO YOU THINK? Who will be the next college president of CRC? C A B D
CAN THIS HELP ASSESS SLO S ? Of course it can! Example- Objective 1c: Define basic cellular and DNA components and functions. Show and discuss the basic components of the cell. Follow up with…
THE GRADE BOOK: I>GRADER Shows screenshots of when clickers were used to remind instructors of what questions were asked when data was collected Can be adjusted to reflect correct answer points and/or participation-based grades Can be exported as an excel or.csv file
THE FUTURE I>Clicker 2 just released and available More capabilities, more costly (of course!) Can track demographics if desired (sex, gender, grade level, age, etc – many pre-loaded options, programmable) WebClicker now available for Smartphones Apps available, but all students must have smartphones with internet access - $$$ Remote access is a potential issue
