2 TN has adopted World Class Instructional Design Assessment (WIDA) Standards  Used by 34 states and 2 territories  Have research to back standards  2012 Amplified standards correspond to Common Core State Standards(CCSS)  Can be viewed at www.wida.uswww.wida.us  Many elements of support through WIDA 10/22/20142

3 Old Standards  Are focused on English language acquisition  More difficult for teachers to use  Lengthy  Do not correspond to CCSS or NGSS  Have not been revised since 2003 10/22/20143

4 New Standards  Are focused on academics  Built around Can-Do Descriptors  Short and concise  Easily blended with CCSS academic and NGSS standards  Correspond to CCSS and NGSS 10/22/20144

5 WIDA’s CAN DO philosophy is visible in the company’s research. WIDA’s ongoing research focuses on five main areas of inquiry : 1.alignment, 2.the relationship between academic language proficiency and academic achievement, 3.classroom implementation of standards, 4.teacher development, 5.and policy guidance. 10/22/20145
