2 Why do you look the way you do? Do you resemble one of your parents, a sibling or a grandparent? What other traits have you inherited from your parents that may have been passed down through your family for generations? Have you only inherited physical traits? Genetics is the science of heredity, and it helps answer all of these questions. In this WebQuest, you will discover the answers to these questions and learn the basics of the science of genetics. 3 In “Mission: Inheritance” you will work with a partner to learn the basics of genetics and heredity. Your mission is to learn about traits and how they are inherited as well as to discover how genetics work. You will watch a video about heredity and traits, explore dominant and recessive genes, and learn to use a Punnett Square to find the probability of certain traits being passed from parents to a child. You will use your knowledge to complete several web-based activities and take an on-line quiz. You will then use all of the knowledge you have acquired to create a PowerPoint presentation or a brochure that teaches others about a certain genetic disorder and explains how it can be passed from one generation to the next. 4 You are ready to begin your mission. Open the “folder” below to find Note Sheet #1, What is Heredity and Note Sheet #2, What is a Trait? Print out these worksheets. Then, go to In the middle column called “Where To Begin,” choose the button called “Heredity and Traits.” Next, choose “What is Heredity?” Watch the slideshow and complete the notes as you read along. 5 Now that you understand about how traits are inherited, it’s time to learn how to do a genetic cross. Sounds impressive, doesn’t it? Open the folder below and print out Note Sheet #3, Learning to Use Punnett Squares. Read over the notes and do the practice Punnett Square. 6 Now go to and read about a Monohybrid Cross and complete the Genetics Practice Problems. When you are finished with those, continue to read and do the Testcross problems. If you are really doing well and would like a challenge, see if you can read, understand and then complete the Incomplete Dominance problem. at the end of Incomplete Dominance. 7 Ready to put your knowledge of genetics to the test? Click on the file below and find the Hornimonster Activity. Print out the worksheet and complete it with your partner. Be sure to get the 4 popsicle sticks from your teacher and follow all of the directions. Complete the data table and answer all questions on the worksheet. Remember to save your work (and your popsicle sticks) in your folder. 9 Now that you have learned about how genetics is involved in the inheritance of traits, it is time to quiz yourself. You and your partner should go to and give the six quiz questions a try. How did you do? All 6 correct - EXPERT Four or five right – GENE SMART Two or three correct – LEARNED A LITTLE! Anything less than that and maybe you should start this WebQuest all over again! Or, just take the quiz again and ask for hints along the way! Be sure to read the correct answers. When you are done, simply close out the page! 10 Your mission is almost complete. Now comes your chance to show your stuff! You have learned how traits are inherited; however, many diseases are also passed down genetically throughout generations. Your final mission is to research a genetic disorder and create a PowerPoint presentation or a Publisher brochure that teaches people about it and explains how it can be inherited. Your PowerPoint should include at least 7 slides and the brochure should have 6 columns - 3 on each side. Use the following link to find some genetic disorders listed on the left side. 13 Now that you have completed Mission: Inheritance, you should have a good understanding of what a trait is and how people inherit traits. You have learned the difference between dominant and recessive genes as well as the terms homozygous and heterozygous. You know how to find the probability of a trait being passed from parents to a child by using a Punnett Square. You can perform a Monohybrid and a Test Cross. And, you have researched a genetic disease and created a project to share information about that disease with others. Great work – mission accomplished! 14 This WebQuest was created for a 7 th grade life science class as a teaching tool for the basics of the study of genetics. Students will need access to computers and a printer as well as 2 popsicle sticks per pair. Student who choose to accept the Challenge on Process 5 will also need 2 pennies per pair. It is advisable for students to have a folder in which to keep all of their papers.
