Unit IX. Solution Chemistry

IX. 1. Solutions and Solubility p

Solution A homogeneous mixture Two or more elements/compounds mixed together has uniform properties

Solvent Part of a solution (larger amount) Ex: water in a salt and water solution

Solute Part of a solution (smaller amount) Salt in a salt & water solution

Soluble Can mix together to form a solution with homogeneous properties Ex: salt and water

Insoluble Cannot mix together Ex: oil and water

Saturated A solution that the solvent is no longer able to dissolve any more solute Ex: once water has dissolved as much salt as possible, it will no longer mix and salt crystals will remain at bottom of container

Can increase the ability of a solvent to dissolve a solute by increasing the temperature

Unsaturated Solution/solvent is able to dissolve more solute

Solubility The maximum amount of the solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a given temperature

IX.2 The Conductivity of Aqueous Solutions p

Conductors Solutions with ions (charged particles) conduct electricity Solutions which allow electricity to flow through them Ex: NaCl (s) Na + (aq) +Cl - (aq) Ionic molecules

Non-conductors Solutions that do NOT allow electricity to flow Solutions without ions Covalent/organic molecules Ex: C 12 H 22 O 11 (s) C 12 H 22 O 11 (aq)
