2 Thanksgiving In the 1600s, in Europe there were many wars and religious protests. Some of these protests created religions we now call Protestant. The original Christian religion persecuted these Protestants. Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed

3 Thanksgiving Many of these people decided to move to other countries. Some of these people decided to come to the new land called America. These people were called Pilgrims. These people had the 1 st Thanksgiving. Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed

4 Thanksgiving Pilgrim – a religious traveler. Anyone who travels for religious worship or freedom. The European Pilgrims looked like this. Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed

6 Thanksgiving These Pilgrims were called Puritans because they were very strict in their religious belief and practice. They often had arguments with the other people on the ship about the rules and laws in the new land. Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed

7 Thanksgiving Because of these arguments, before they landed, they reached an agreement about these rules and laws of living here. The agreement is called the Mayflower Compact. It is the first set of laws made in this country. Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed

8 Thanksgiving The Europeans came to this land in 1620. They arrived in ships like these. Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed

9 Thanksgiving The journey on the ocean was rough and dangerous. They arrived late in the year. They didnt have time to build shelters or plant crops. Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed

10 Thanksgiving The native people helped them by giving them food and showed them which animals to hunt. Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed

11 Thanksgiving The Europeans called the native people Indians because they thought they were in India. They didnt realize that they were in a new land called America. India America Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed

12 Thanksgiving The Indians saved the lives of these Europeans. They showed them how to build shelters and to gather food from the land. The Europeans were very grateful. Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed

13 Thanksgiving During the second year they harvested a lot of food. They decided to invite the Indians to a feast. They called the feast a Thanksgiving feast. The celebration lasted for 3 days. Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed
