Marshes have grasses and swamps have trees. Marshes at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge are in danger from rising sea levels. The marshes help filter nutrients and pollutants and act as a barrier to storm surges. Also, marshes acts as nurseries for wildlife.

This region saw improvements in seagrasses, and moderate water quality related to dissolved oxygen and total nitrogen. Chlorophyll was very good and hard clams were poor in this region. The grade of this region improved slightly from a C in 2008.
