Adverb or Adjective? - TLW distinguish between adjectives and adverbs.
*An adjective will modify a noun or pronoun.
* Adjectives Answer… Which one? What kind? How many? How much?
*An adverb will modify… a verb an adjective another adverb
* An Adverb Answers : How?When?Where? To what extent?
Adverb modifying verb: Lumberjacks work hard.
Adjective modifying noun: Lumberjacks enjoy hard work.
Most –ly words are adverbs. Some –ly words are adjectives!
Some Examples… A kingly feast A friendly person
He telephoned her very early that morning. Early - adverb - when
She was awakened by the early call. Early - adjective - what kind
The cheerful tourist drove through London. Cheerful – adjective - what kind
The tourist drove cheerfully through London. The tourist drove cheerfully through London. Cheerfully – adverb - how
The tourist met a real prince. The tourist really met a prince. adjective adverb
He had a bad subway ride. The train shook badly. adjective adverb
*Use adjectives, including bad, good, and real, to describe nouns or pronouns.
*Adj.Adv. realreally badbadly goodwell
Which Sentence is Correct? The ball player is bad. OR He played bad in that last game.
Find the mistakes! The tourists exhibited their photos proud and eager.
Find the mistake Sally laughed merry at the photo.
Adjective or Adverb? Rosa was eager to see the exhibit. eager(adj.)
The artists used colors well. well/adv.
They painted their subjects boldly. boldly/adv.
Rosa liked the dramatic interpretations. dramatic/adj.
Her teacher spoke briefly about the various styles. briefly/adv.
