Conservation of Momentum The total momentum of a closed system (no outside impulses) remains constant Momentum Before = Momentum After p 1 + p 2 = p 1 ’ + p 2 ’

Collisions Momentum is conserved Momentum before: m 1 v 1 + m 2 v 2 Momentum after: m 1 v 1 ’ + m 2 v 2 ’ Momentum before = Momentum after

Collisions in 2D Momentum is a vector Vector sum prior to collision equals vector sum after collision REMEMBER: This is NOT an arithmetic problem
