Through this form of narration, Remarque conveys a harrowing portrayal of the brutality of war and the reader has access to Paul’s graphic descriptions of war and his thoughts and feelings in relation to it. We also understand the devastating effect such experiences have on young soldiers. Furthermore, within this form of narration Remarque employs different styles which also convey the horrors of war and he ends his novel by changing to a third-person narrator to give Paul’s death further impact and to highlight the futility of war.
