Timeline of U.S. Involvement in WWII 1935-March – First Neutrality Act passed – banned shipment of war materials to belligerents 1936 – Second Neutrality Act passed – banned loans to belligerents 1937 – Third Neutrality Act passed – allowed president to restrict nonmunitions sales to a “cash-and- carry” basis 1939 – Fourth Neutrality Act passed – banned U.S. ships from carrying goods or passengers to belligerent ports but allowed U.S. sales of munitions on a “cash-and- carry” basis Marhc 1941 – Lend- Lease Act passed – diminished the laws; allowed president to lend weapons and materials to defend nations vital to U.S. security
Timeline of U.S. Involvement in WWII July 1941-December 7, 1941 August 1941 – Churchill and Roosevelt sign the Atlantic Charter – upheld free trade among nations and right of people to choose own gov’t September 4, 1941 – German U- Boat fired on U.S. destroyer in Atlantic; Roosevelt orders navy commanders to shoot German subs on sight; beginning of undeclared naval war with Hitler July 1941 – to stop Japanese advance in SE Asia, sent aid to strengthen Chinese resistance; cut off oil shipments to Japan when they overran French Indochina July-December 1941 – Japanese continue their conquests – plan massive attacks on British and Dutch colonies in SE Asia and American outposts in Pacific at same time December 7, 1941 – Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor
Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto said that Pearl Harbor was “a dagger pointed at [Japan’s] throat” and must be destroyed.
