Tuesday March 25, 2014 Goal: Discuss the physical & cultural geography of Europe to get an overview of the continent In-class: Finish Europe Part 1 Notes, Begin Europe Part II Notes Reflection #3: AnalyzingEurope Look back at yesterday’s notes about Europe’s education & lifestyle. What are your thoughts about Europe’s educational system and social welfare (giving money to families, paying for healthcare)? Do you agree with their methods or do you prefer the American style? Write 4-5 sentences explaining why you like/dislike their educational and social welfare systems. Homework: Study for Map Quiz!!!
Population Changes Before 1750 - Population rose and fell Slightly more births than deaths After 1750 - Population ↑ (WHY?) Industrial Revolution - Mass production of goods Sanitation ↑ Health Care ↑ Food Supplies ↑ People move to cities for jobs Need large families for farming No need in cities
E’s Population Shrinkage Women wait to have kids to be educated/have careers Family planning methods - control births High cost of living HOUSING COSTS ↑ Need 2 incomes to purchase house Childcare is Expensive The more kids you have the more money you have to pay
E’s Population Woes 1. Fewer Children means: ↓ Students = ↓ Teacher = ↓ Schools Businesses for kids go out of business ➔ affects sales of regular businesses 2. Less Workers Businesses move to countries w/higher pop. Less soldiers for military - Country weakens 3. Older Population - Cannot Work
Possible Solutions Birth Bonuses - Money for having kids Reduced taxes and rent Pay for daycare Paid leave when a baby is born Flexible working hours Aging Raise Retirement Age Cut pensions (retirement money)
Pollution Acid Rain Rain contains acid from factory smoke & car exhaust Can damage plants, fish, animals, buildings Transboundary pollution Pollution that moves across country borders Black Triangle - German/Polish/Czech Border Major source of air pollution/acid rain Many factories
