Mixtures & Solutions Biology
Mixtures Combination of substances where components retain their own properties Do not combine chemically Are the following substances or mixtures? –water –sugar water
Solutions Mixture where one substance is dissolved in another & will not settle out –Solute - substance that dissolves –Solvent - substance it dissolves in Concentration –The more solute per solvent, the greater the concentration
Importance of Solutions In organisms, many important substance are dissolved in water Organisms must maintain certain concentrations of solutions –Ex. pancreas keeps concentration of sugar within a certain range
pH Scale Scale to measure the strength of an acid or base Measures from is neutral 0-7 is acidic 7-14 is basic
pH scale Each number on the scale is 10X as concentrated as the number before it
Quiz Which is more acidic? –pH 2 or pH 6 –pH 5 or pH 7 Which is more basic? –pH 8 or pH 9 –pH 10 or pH 8 How much more concentrated is pH 5 than pH 6? How much more concentrated is pH 14 than pH 12?
