3 Solutions Mixture where one substance is dissolved in another & will not settle out –Solute - substance that dissolves –Solvent - substance it dissolves in Concentration –The more solute per solvent, the greater the concentration

5 Importance of Solutions In organisms, many important substance are dissolved in water Organisms must maintain certain concentrations of solutions –Ex. pancreas keeps concentration of sugar within a certain range

6 pH Scale Scale to measure the strength of an acid or base Measures from is neutral 0-7 is acidic 7-14 is basic

7 pH scale Each number on the scale is 10X as concentrated as the number before it

8 Quiz Which is more acidic? –pH 2 or pH 6 –pH 5 or pH 7 Which is more basic? –pH 8 or pH 9 –pH 10 or pH 8 How much more concentrated is pH 5 than pH 6? How much more concentrated is pH 14 than pH 12?
