WISE GIS-IT Workshop – Copenhague, 7-8 May 2012 WISE main rivers WFD-ECRINS matching and advances in linear referencing Right click to “Change Picture” to your institutional logo and adjust Alberto Lorenzo, ETC-SIA / EEA alberto.lorenzo@uma.es

Slide 2 Index 1.WISE main rivers 2.WFD-ECRINS integration –Our approach: integrating WFD reporting into ECRINS (why? Issues – canals; advantages: calculations – water accounts, cross-cutting) –The method (history, new developments) –Transfer RIVER_CD screenshots 3.Dynamic segmentation process in detail –Advantages: routes  reporting based on tables? 4.Future –Planning 2012: canals, groundwater

Slide 3 1. WISE Main Rivers WISE main rivers are the main rivers reported by MS complying the WFD The defintion of main rivers by WFD establishes a threshold of 500 sq.kms Situation: map of the main rivers reported by MS we are working with: (April 2012)

Slide 4 1. WISE Main Rivers First version built in 2010 Refers to data reported until August 2010 New draft version: released in April 2012 New version contains previous version plus new rivers Methodology for the new rivers had to be revisited as the previous is very difficult to maintain (April 2012)

Slide 5 2. WFD-ECRINS integration Our approach: integrating WFD reporting into ECRINS (why? Issues – canals; advantages: calculations – water accounts, cross-cutting) WHY? ECRINS is a comprehensive, regular, connected database Advantages Calculations and accounting (connected database: rivers + lakes + groundwater…) Cross-cutting !? First time to do it

Slide 6 2. WFD-ECRINS integration The method (history, new developments) 2 steps Transferring Wfd River_cd into Ecrins Transferring Wfd segments into Ecrins

Slide 7 2. WFD-ECRINS integration The method (history, new developments) History (How we did before) New developments (Improvements)

Slide 8 2. WFD-ECRINS integration The method Outcomes: Main rivers below surface criteria remain main rivers Rivers not reported as main, above surface criteria  COMM/EEA/ETC to contact MS

Slide 9 2. WFD-ECRINS integration Select a segment and trace downstream

Slide 10 2. WFD-ECRINS integration Tributaries: select segments >500 sqkm flowing into a river

Slide 11 2. WFD-ECRINS integration ‘Identify” of the features

Slide 12 Identify the river to be found Automation Previous: tr_identity is identity of WFD main river with FECs Start with ECRINS final segment Get TNODE value as to_node Select C_Node where NodID = to_node Find closest tr_identity (select by location, 250m), where exutoire = 1 –get: CODE_ARBO River_CD

Slide 13 2. WFD-ECRINS integration Result

Slide 14 3. Dynamic segmentation

Slide 15 3. Dynamic segmentation Dynamic segmentation is the process of transforming linearly referenced data (commonly called ‘events’) stored in a table into a feature that can be displayed on a map We will consider the WFD as the events and the ECRINS database as the routes

Slide 16 3. Dynamic segmentation Dynamic segmentation process in detail: steps Dissolve the rivers with the WFD id River segmentation Each vertex of the route will have a new value with the distance from the starting point Create waterbodies WFD river segmenas are located into ECRINS main rivers

Slide 17 3. Dynamic segmentation Dynamic segmentation: ADVANTAGES Routes  reporting based on tables Dynamic information vs. Static information If segmentation change in WFD: is OK If new features are added in WFD: is OK
