3 STAGES Searching for research literature efficiently Assessing and evaluating Integrating
SEARCHING The Library catalogue Full text ejournals Indexes and Electronic databases The Internet
TARGETING YOUR SEARCH Define your topic Determine which search tools are the most suitable Keep careful notes Scan the abstracts from the ‘hits’ from the search
REFINING THE SEARCH Too few hits –Check spelling and punctuation of your search terms –Use a wildcard (usually an *) –Use synonyms and broader terms –Use an ‘OR’ search, eg human resources OR personnel management –Check the few useful hits for references to other literature
REFINING THE SEARCH CONTINUED… Too many hits –Use narrower more specific terms –Do an ‘AND’, ‘NOT’, ‘NEAR’ search –Limit the search to dates, abstract and title field
ASSESSING THE LITERATURE Are the journal articles peer reviewed? Assess the background to the study Does the work pose questions which will provide further focus to the study? Is the methodology for the study appropriate Do the conclusions pull together the various results of the study?
