6 Young People’s Views I: What’s the worst thing about living in Barking and Dagenham? YP: The Stabbings. School School used to be alright, we liked it but not for the right reasons. It was OK when we got high on weed in the mornings. Representation We are judged by people - People see us as nothing People look at me as if I want to do something - if I wear a hoodie they look at me as if I was a bad guy

7 Young People’s Views College versus School I suppose – I dunno – I’d prefer to go back to school just because of my mates. In college they treat you a lot better – the teachers and that – they treat you like adults – and they don’t talk to you like you’re stupid. Teachers If you don't particularly get along with the teacher, or agree with the teacher in some subjects then if you need help it can be hard to go to the teacher and get help - sometimes you will not agree with what they are saying. Careers Advice She (careers adviser) put you down and stuff. I said I wanna be a lawyer, and she just asked me stupid questions like I didn't know what I wanted to do and I was just being forced into it or something. She kept putting me down so I just stopped going to her.

8 Research Film Alongside the report for dissemination of findings, we made a short documentary

9 Conclusions 261 students at age 18/19 who entered HE in 2001, to 2007/8 when 609 students at this age progressed to HE Current limit on university places + rise in applications + future top up fees = RISK
