17 So what did we do about all that we had discovered? Immobility Encouraging students to talk to students on placement living away from home/university to share their experiences. 32 Third Years - Final 39% wanted to complete their degree as quickly as possible 50% claimed they didn’t have a placement option 53% have a part-time job

33 Third Years - Placement 58% found it difficult to find a position that suited them 42% were disheartened by rejections 54% moved house to take up their placement; 38% would have but didn’t have to.

34 Fourth Years 30% moved house to take up their placement; 35% would have but didn’t have to. Advice to second years:- –Apply early –Take advantage of help university offers –Research the role

35 2009/10 - Findings Parents of Generation Y. Students want to do a placement. Future Thinking. Half fees for the placement year is a barrier. Too much competition for placements. Living at home is even more important!

36 What we’re doing now….. Mock Assessment Centres. Development of online Psychometric tests. Mock Interviews. Peer Views. The Parent’s Survival Guide. Social Networking. Regular Visits – Year 1 is a priority. Serious Monitoring. Guerrilla Marketing. Local Marketing Campaign. The Film! We’ll show you that at the end.

37 Coming up for air…. What have we learned?

38 We have stayed the same…. The students have changed. The climate has changed. Communication has changed. Employers are seeing a rich field of talent – only the best will do. We all have to work harder and communicate better. It has been a wake-up call for us all.
