LITERARY DIALOGUE Objective: to examine the use of talk in The Lovely Bones Key terms: transactional, referential, expressive, free direct speech
Five key types of talk or TRIPE Transactional - used to make a transaction or get something done. Referential – used to provide information about something. Interactional – used for socialising. Phatic – small talk Expressive – conveying and describing feelings. TASK: Write down one example of each of the above.
Why do writers create (or ‘craft’) dialogue? To reveal character To forward a plot/ action To establish a setting To explore a theme TASK: Now find one example of each in your books i.e. one example of dialogue being used to reveal character, one example of talk being used to forward plot etc
What is the purpose of the dialogue here? ALI: Tea. No bread. No cake STAFF NURSE WHITE: Please Ali: What? STAFF NURSE WHITE: Say ‘please’, Ali. Not ‘what’. I won’t have ‘what’. I’ll have ‘please’, thank you very much
What is the purpose of the dialogue here? EMMA: I love this song! JAMES: What did you say? EMMA: I said ‘I love this song!’ JAMES: What?

Key Terms Reporting clause – e.g. she said, he replied Free direct speech – when direct speech is presented without, or with minimal, reporting clauses such as ‘he said’. Direct speech – when speech is presented with reporting clauses
Read the extract on page 22 beginning ‘on the morning of the tenth’ and ending ‘the shiny silver bowl’ 1. What kind of conversation is this? 2. The extract contains both direct and free direct speech. Comment on the effects achieved by using these techniques in this extract of dialogue between Lindsay and her father.
