2 Projeto Hospitais Saudáveis - PHS ( Healthy Hospitals Project)  A very new Brazilian organization  Started as an initiative of health professionals in 2008  Formally constituted in early 2010 as a non-profit, non- governmental organization  Based in São Paulo, acting nationally  Focal point of HCWH in Brazil www.hospitaissaudaveis.org 2

3 Brazilian Health System  More than 5,566 municipalities  190.000.000 inhabitants  70% attended only by the public health system  7.300 Hospitals  432,000 hospital beds  94,000 healthcare facilities  Between 3 and 5 million of workers directly employed in health care 3

4 Consumption of resources and pollution In 2010, the Brazilian economy spent $ 140 billion (6% GDP) on healthcare, half of that with:  products, materials and other supplies  equipment and technology  energy and water  facilities and buildings Brazilian Health System 4

7 Projeto Hospitais Saudáveis - PHS ( Healthy Hospitals Project) PHS accomplishes its mission through the following actions:  Develop research, produce information and influence public policies about risks to patients, workers and the environment in health care sector;  Raise public awareness and prepare health care professionals;  Encourage public and private institutions to get involved and collaborate with the goals of PHS;  Evaluate the results of illness, accidents and environmental damage prevention actions developed by health care providers;  Develop, evaluate and promote alternative technologies to eliminate or reduce environmental and health risks in health care activities;  Promote ethics, peace, citizenship, human rights, democracy and others universal values. www.hospitaissaudaveis.org 7

19 A Closer Look at the Economics 19 In 2007, world health expenditures reached $5.3 trillion USD, $639 per person per year or 8-10% of global GDP.

20 Adaptation  We need develop capacity to understand and address the shifting burden of disease.  We need to strengthen our health systems and make them resilient. 20

21 Mitigation  WHO mandate from member states: develop “programs for health systems that will contribute to reducing their own greenhouse gas emissions”  The health sector has a significant climate footprint.  We can lead by example and demonstrate climate friendly policies and approaches in our societies.  Climate mitigation can provide co-benefits to public health  Mitigation and adaptation strategies can work together 21
