Answering Enquiry Skills Questions exaggerationexaggeration being selective in use of factsbeing selective in use of facts for and against a point of viewfor and against a point of view comparing and contrastingcomparing and contrasting drawing conclusionsdrawing conclusions

What C onclusions? Conclusions: “Say what you ‘C’ – T.S.B.!” Trends Significant features Big Picture

Trends What is happening OVERALL during the time covered by the source Is the overall trend up or down ? Is there an overall difference between any groups (e.g. men /women, political parties)

Significant Features Is there anything in particular about the source that ‘sticks out’? e.g. is unemployment much higher or lower at any time, are there big differences between the numbers of women MPs in 1997 compared with 1992 Are there any SIGNIFICANT FEATURES?

The Big Picture This is the hardest part of a ‘Conclusions’ type ES question because you have to look at all of the sources together and say what the overall picture is e.g. “From all of the sources together it is clear that younger workers are less likely to be unemployed for a long period of time than older workers.”

Exaggeration / being selective Step One - Open the box! Before you even read the sources, look at the statement in the box to see what you are being asked to do. i.e. open the box Study sources one and two and answer the question that follows Source One lkdfjv;kjfnv;jf;kjfn;j fn ;kjn ;jn ;ajn ;ajn ;akjvn ;akjvn ;kajnv ;akjvn ;skjvn ;skjv ;skjvn ;skjn ;skjvn s;jfvgn ;skjgvn ;sjvn ;sjv n;skjfvn ;skjvn ;skjfvn ;sjf n;sjfn ;sjf n;skjb n;sj n;sj n;sjn ;sj n;sjn ;sj n;sjfn ;skj Source Two kkkvhg;kadfn;foj;ofjn a;dfojbha;ofjbn;aojfn a[odfb;clvkb’[aofdpib [aodkjva;lfblfkb[‘oibj h[oifknbojbonb[ojnbn fb;lknadfn[bof’[bbkf kbnbknfbnfokbnkb Statement by Saphron Mc Glumpher What evidence is there in sources One and Two that Saphron Mc Glumpher is being selective in her use of facts? Watch this space!!

Step Two - “She says… but…”Step Two - “She says… but…” You then have to pick out the bit of her statement that is contradicted by the sources: blah, blah, blah,“Saphron Mc Glumpher says in her statement that blah, blah, blah, Blah, blah, blahbut Source One shows that …. Blah, blah, blah Step Two - “She says… but…”Step Two - “She says… but…” You then have to pick out the bit of her statement that is contradicted by the sources: blah, blah, blah,“Saphron Mc Glumpher says in her statement that blah, blah, blah, Blah, blah, blahbut Source One shows that …. Study sources one and two and answer the question that follows

“She Says …but…” again! For every 2 marks the question is worth, you have to prove the sources show Saphron is exaggerating or being selective you also have to use all of the sources you are told to use don’t just copy huge chunks of the source
