2 What is an introduction? 0 An introduction is how you start your essay in one paragraph 0 An introduction gives your reader a chance to get to know the subject of your essay 0 An introduction has THREE PARTS.

5 An Introduction is NOT… 0 The whole story retold 0 A summary 0 a place for ANY quotation 0 More than 5 sentences

6 Uglies Sample Openings 0 Background information 0 Example: Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is a dystopian novel about a young female protagonist on her mission to discover the definitions of beauty and friendship. 0 An interesting fact 0 Example: There are more than 13.8 million cosmetic surgeries per year. 0 An interesting question 0 Example: Do you know the value of inner beauty?

7 How do you finish an introduction? 0 A THESIS! You already wrote these in your C/C Packet and on your notecard we worked on in class. Please check to see if it needs revision. 0 Please copy this word for word when you are finishing your introduction. 0 Please make sure this is the LAST sentence of your introduction.

8 So what goes in the middle? 0 Connect your opening sentence to your thesis statement with 2 to 3 sentences 0 Include a variety of background sentences or questions 0 The whole introduction will be 5 sentences in length.

9 Example Introduction Set Up 0 First Sentence: Opening Line 0 Second through Fourth: Connecting Sentences 0 Fifth Sentence: Thesis.

10 Example Introduction 1 0 Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is a dystopian novel about a young female protagonist on her mission to discover the definitions of beauty in relationship to society expectations. Tally must decide what matters most to her: physical beauty or inner beauty. Throughout her travels, she meets many people with varying opinions of what is considered attractive. Ultimately, Tally decides to see the value of inner beauty after traveling to the Smoke. The Pretties think everyone has to be a standard of pretty whereas the Uglies in the Smoke believe you are fine the way you are.
