Global Warming Melting Glaciers

What is Global Warming? Global Warming is the gradual warming of the earth’s atmosphere caused by the concentration of gasses, especially carbon dioxide, that absorb heat from the sun

Causes of Global Warming Burning fossil fuels: Burning fossil fuels: –Methane –Coal Industrial Activity Industrial Activity –Nitrous Oxide –Halocarbons Halocarbons trap more heat into our atmosphere than Carbon Dioxide. Halocarbons trap more heat into our atmosphere than Carbon Dioxide.

Global Warming Pros Global Warming will cause the earth to be warmer than it has been in over 1 million yrs. Global Warming will cause the earth to be warmer than it has been in over 1 million yrs. Many lakes and rivers in the world that used to freeze all winter, never freeze at all. Many lakes and rivers in the world that used to freeze all winter, never freeze at all. When icebergs melt they uncover dark blue water which attracts the sun making the water warmer causing glaciers to melt. 6 Global Warming Pros Statistics Statistics –Nine of the ten warmest years in the last 150 years have occurred between 1995 – 2005 –The Artic is heating twice as fast as the rest of the earth –Glaciers melt at a rate of 8% per decade There may be no trace of Glaciers by There may be no trace of Glaciers by –Sea levels rise at 1 cm. per very 4 years.

Global Warming Pros The rapid climate change effects of Global Warming have caused: The rapid climate change effects of Global Warming have caused: –Wildfires –Heat Waves –Droughts –Hurricanes

Global Warming Cons There was a temperature decrease from There was a temperature decrease from The 12 th Century was unusually warm The 12 th Century was unusually warm Since February 2007 there has been 1/3 more ice in Antarctica. Since February 2007 there has been 1/3 more ice in Antarctica. The warmest year in the Arctic was in 1940 The warmest year in the Arctic was in 1940

Going Green Colleges Colleges – Penn State has 20% of its energy coming from solar or wind power.
