“S: and T:” Drives 1 (Re) Introducing the…

COLLABORATION! And Controlled Interaction 2 So that TEACHERS AND STUDENTS can both reap the rewards of… WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

TEACHERS FRONT OFFICE COLLABORATION! On the S: Drive Professionals, sharing with each other! Documents, lesson plans, spreadsheets, links to resources on the internet Sharing the information needed to make a better school. 3 (Secretary) (Counselor)

The “S:” Drive is for STAFF The “S:” drive has many different FOLDERS – One folder for each building Within each building, one folder for each Department Sharing between departments is also possible 4

The “S:” Drive Can be visualized of as something like this: 5 \Derby\ \Covington\ \Bingham Farms\ \Berkshire\ \Beverly\ S:\ Etc… Separate “Folders” Each folder holds a separate school. Since most staff work at just one school, you can basically think of the folder that holds your school as being “THE” S: Drive.

The “S:” Drive for one building… Here’s a more detailed look 6 \DER-FAC\ \DER-BLD\NCA \DER-BLD\FORMS \DER-BA\ \DER-TEA\ S:\DERBY \ Separate “Folders” Each folder can hold more folders and files, such as Wordprocessing Spreadsheets Pictures Whatever! But… But only Teachers can see stuff in the TEA folder only Front Office staff can see in the BA folder The BLD folder is for sharing between departments.

\DER-FAC\ \DER-BLD\NCA \DER-BLD\FORMS \DER-BA\ \DER-TEA\ Teachers collaborating with other teachers in their “TEA” folder 7 (Secretary) (Counselor) Custodian 2 Custodian 1 (Teacher A) ( Teacher B) (Teacher C) Different departments get different rights for their own shared areas.

\DER-FAC\ \DER-BLD\NCA \DER-BLD\FORMS \DER-BA\ \DER-TEA\ S:\DERBY \ 8 (This folder, S:\Derby\Der-bld\Forms\ is read/write for the Secretary, but read-ONLY to everyone else.) (Secretary) (Counselor) Custodian 2 Custodian 1 (Teacher A) ( Teacher B) (Teacher C) Controlled Interaction! We can also create special folders for

\DER-FAC\ \DER-BLD\NCA \DER-BLD\FORMS \DER-BA\ \DER-TEA\ S:\DERBY \ 9 Here is an example of a folder that is SHARED between three people in two DIFFERENT departments. (Secretary) (Counselor) Custodian 2 Custodian 1 (Teacher A) ( Teacher B) (Teacher C)

10 Best Practices: Start small – make one folder in your department’s folder Ask others – Your TOA, the Helpdesk, other staff members Practice with a colleague – Make “test” shared folders Show off - Help others by sharing your BEST work Invite others – Even collaboration needs a kick start.

11 What’s next? The T: Drive… Teacher Controlled Teacher-Student Interaction AND Collaboration!

\DOE JANE\TEAM\ \DOE JANE\HAND OUT\ \DOE JANE\HAND IN\ \SMITH JIM\TEAM\ \SMITH JIM\HAND OUT\ \SMITH JIM\HAND IN\ T:\TEACHERS (TEACHER-STUDENT COMMON) 12

While classroom lectures and discussions, are the basic way that teachers and students exchange information… another way is FOLDERS 13 Teacher and students Student to student (via the Team folder) Teacher finds/creates content and puts in into the hand out folder and… Students go to the handout folder and get their copies. Hand In Hand Out Team Students do their work/test and then hand it in. Not allowed to change answers, copy others. You can have one team or a hundred team folders

\DOE JANE\TEAM\ \DOE JANE\HAND OUT\ \DOE JANE\HAND IN\ \SMITH JIM\TEAM\ \SMITH JIM\HAND OUT\ \SMITH JIM\HAND IN\ T:\TEACHERS (TEACHER-STUDENT COMMON) THREE FOLDERS FOR EVERY TEACHER… 14

\DOE JANE\TEAM\ \DOE JANE\HAND OUT\ \DOE JANE\HAND IN\ \SMITH JIM\TEAM\ \SMITH JIM\HAND OUT\ \SMITH JIM\HAND IN\ T:\TEACHERS 15 Note – Students can READ/COPY from ANY teachers’ hand out folder. Teachers find or create or change files (content) for students to see (read/copy) or use for practice on or complete as an assignment. Favorites (web links) can be placed here too

\DOE JANE\TEAM\ \DOE JANE\HAND OUT\ \DOE JANE\HAND IN\ \SMITH JIM\TEAM\ \SMITH JIM\HAND OUT\ \SMITH JIM\HAND IN\ T:\TEACHERS 16 Teachers can organize the hand in folders, one for each class, project, test, whatever. Note – Hand In folders are MUCH less tedious than going through email after email to download attachments. Students copy and paste (or drag) files to the hand in folders. They cannot change another student’s work. Or delete their own for that matter. Its like a one-way letter slot

\DOE JANE\TEAM\ \DOE JANE\HAND OUT\ \DOE JANE\HAND IN\ \SMITH JIM\TEAM\ \SMITH JIM\HAND OUT\ \SMITH JIM\HAND IN\ T:\TEACHERS 17 Teachers can have one team, or many. They can facilitate Teacher-Student collaboration… Or student-student collaboration. With the teacher just monitoring or occasionally guiding…

\DOE JANE\TEAM\ \DOE JANE\HAND OUT\ \DOE JANE\HAND IN\ \SMITH JIM\TEAM\ \SMITH JIM\HAND OUT\ \SMITH JIM\HAND IN\ T:\TEACHERS 18 Sure, taken all at once it looks chaotic and overwhelming… (This is just TWO teachers) But there really are simple rules facilitating it all

\PEACE DAY\TEAM\ \PEACE DAY\HAND OUT\ \PEACE DAY\HAND IN\ \NEWSPAPER\TEAM\ \NEWSPAPER\HAND OUT\ \NEWSPAPER\HAND IN\ Really, the only difference is that two or more teachers share a common set of hand in, hand out and team folders. 19 T:\GROUPS

20 So, that’s it. S: drive  Create as many folders/files as you want within your department.  When you want to share with another department, call the helpdesk and they’ll make a new folder branching off of the BLD folder. T: drive  Create as many folder/files in your “Hand In” and “Hand out”folders as you want  Ask your TOA to create whatever Team folders you want. Be sure to also give your TOA the list of students who should be a part of that team.  If two or more teachers need to share folders, have your TOA make a new group.

21 THANK YOU (for your time and attention) Kurt Vogel Network Services Go! Collaborate, Interact! (Via) your S: and T: Drive folders And of course…
