SCIENTIFIC SAMPLE PILOT TEST Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium April 2013

When is the testing window for the Scientific Sample Pilot Test? February 20-May 10, 2013 Each scientifically selected school will be assigned a two-week window within the larger testing window. Each school will need to complete the testing of its students in the designated grade(s). The number of students who can test at one time will depend on the number of computers available to them as well as the school’s network and bandwidth capabilities. March 26, 2013

What content areas will be tested in the Scientific Pilot Test? English Language Arts/Literacy Mathematics March 26, 2013

How will the Scientific Pilot Test be administered? Online secure testing system March 26, 2013

What type of items will be on the Scientific Pilot Test? Selected-Response Items – The student selects an answer option by clicking anywhere on the answer choice. Constructed-Response Items – The student types a response into a response box. Technology-Enhanced Items – The student uses the mouse or keyboard to manipulate items or draw responses in the response box. Performance Tasks – The student completes the extended activity in preparation for answering questions. Note: All tests may not contain all item types. March 26, 2013

Can we preview items? Scientific Pilot – Not to “preview” items – To inform item development March 26, 2013

PRACTICE TEST Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium April 2013

What is the testing window for the Practice Test? May 29, 2013, through the summer and across the next school year – Schools may use the Practice Test for professional development activities and for discussions with parents, policymakers and other interested stakeholders April 2013

What content areas will be tested in the Practice Test? English Language Arts/Literacy Mathematics March 26, 2013

How will the Practice Test be administered? Online testing system – There are no security constraints – Practice Test does not require a user name and password March 26, 2013

What type of items will be on the Practice Test? Selected-Response Items – The student selects an answer option by clicking anywhere on the answer choice. Constructed-Response Items – The student types a response into a response box. Technology-Enhanced Items – The student uses the mouse or keyboard to manipulate items or draw responses in the response box. Performance Tasks – The student completes the extended activity in preparation for answering questions. Note: All tests will contain a full array of item types. March 26, 2013

Can we preview items? Practice Test – Yes – To allow students to experience items that look and function like those on the Scientific Pilot March 26, 2013

DYNAMIC LEARNING MAPS ALTERNATE ASSESSMENT CONSORTIUM April 2013

Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) Alternate Assessment Consortium Developing a computer-based assessment for students with significant cognitive disabilities for whom, even with accommodations, general state assessments are not appropriate. Led by the Center for Educational Testing and Evaluation (CETE) with the University of Kansas (KU). April 2013

Member States April 2013

Federal Support Office of Special Education Programs, United States Department of Education, funded two General Supervision Enhancement Grants in 2010 to support the development of alternate assessments linked to the Common Core Standards (CCSS). DLM and the National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) at the University of Minnesota were awarded five-year grants. April 2013

Common Core Essential Elements Specific statements of the content and skills that are linked to CCSS grade level specific expectations for students with significant disabilities. Bridge for students with significant cognitive disabilities to achieve grade differentiated expectations and provide challenge and rigor appropriate for these students. Statements are not downward extension to pre-K, are not general essence statements, and are not statements of functional skills. April 2013

WV NxG Extended Standards DLM CCEE incorporated into – Alternate Academic Standards in Mathematics (WVBE Policy )WVBE Policy – Alternate Academic Achievement Standards in English Language Arts (WVBE Policy )WVBE Policy Effective date: July 1, 2013 April 2013

Dynamic Learning Map Learning map is a network of sequenced learning targets. Dynamic learning maps show a learning landscape in which multiple skills are related to many other skills. – Show the relationships between skills but also show multiple learning pathways. April 2013
