U2 Prayer Service Love Rescue Me With Bob Dylan Psalm 23 U2 music, lyrics and video for this service and bulletin courtesy of Universal Music Publishing Inc.
Opening Hymn: Beautiful Day The heart is a bloom, shoots up through stony ground But there's no room, no space to rent in this town You're out of luck and the reason that you had to care, The traffic is stuck and you're not moving anywhere. You thought youd found a friend to take you out of this place Someone you could lend a hand in return for grace
It's a beautiful day, the sky falls And you feel like it's a beautiful day Its a beautiful day Dont let it get away Youre on the road but youve got no destination Youre in the mud, in the maze of her imagination You love this town even if it doesnt ring true Youve been all over and its been all over you
It's a beautiful day Dont let it get away It's a beautiful day Dont let it get away Touch me, take me to that other place Teach me, I know Im not a hopeless case
See the world in green and blue See China right in front of you See the canyons broken by cloud See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out See the bedouin fires at night See the oil fields at first light See the bird with a leaf in her mouth After the flood all the colours came out It was a beautiful day Dont let it get away A beautiful day
Touch me, take me to that other place Reach me, I know Im not a hopeless case What you dont have you dont need it now What you dont know you can feel it somehow What you dont have you dont need it now You dont need it now, you dont need it now Beautiful day
Opening Acclamation All: Sign of the Cross Priest: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. People: And also with you.
Gathering Prayer Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Song of Praise: Jesus Christ Jesus was a man who traveled through the land A hard working man and brave Well he said to the rich: give your money to the poor Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Well he went to the preacher he went to the law He told them all the same He said: sell all your jewelry and give it to the poor But they laid Jesus Christ in his grave Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
When Jesus came to town, all the working folks around Believed what he did say Well the bankers and the preachers, they nailed him on a cross And they laid Jesus Christ in his grave And poor working people, they followed him around They sung and shouted gay Well the cops and the soldiers, they nailed him in the air And they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Well this song was written in New York City Of rich man, preacher and slave Well if Jesus was to preach what he preached in Galilee They would lay Jesus Christ in his grave Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Gospel: Mark 9:30-37 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you Lord. Jesus and his disciples went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again."
But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the way?" But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all."
Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Christ.
Homily What One Can Do
The Millennium Development Goals …and what we can do
In September of 2000 the United Nations and its member states pledged to accomplish a set of 8 goals to reduce human suffering across the globe by 2015
Some facts about Human Suffering in 2006 More than 800 million people go to bed hungry every day Every 3.6 seconds another person dies of starvation Every year, 6 million children die from malnutrition before their 5th birthday
5 million people, mostly children, die each year from water-borne diseases More than a billion people lack access to clean water and basic sanitation Every 30 seconds a child dies of malaria HIV/AIDS kills 6,000 people a day while infecting 8,200 more
Civil war and political unrest displace millions from their homes and weak governments drown in unsustainable debt Meanwhile… high trade barriers prevent exports from gaining access to world markets
In all, more than 1.2 billion people are living in extreme poverty famine, drought, disease and war In 2006 combine to create unimaginable human suffering … and it doesnt have to be that way
The Millennium Development Goals represent a plan for ending extreme poverty
Clean water for all
Feeding the hungry
Healing the sick
Improving maternal health
Reducing child mortality
School for every child
Global Partnerships between: Governments Businesses Churches Individuals
But how much will it cost?
100 Billion Dollars …a year
SAY WHAT!!! Thats a lot of money How do we do that?
CURRENT LEVELTARGET LEVEL
We can educate others
We can vote
We can contact our elected representatives
We can give.7% of our own income

We can pray
Truly, I tell you, as you did it for the least of [my brothers]… you did it for me. Matthew 25:37-40
Together we are One
In 2000, every nation in the world committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger The goals are to Achieve Universal Primary Education for Children Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women Reduce Child Mortality Improve Maternal Health Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases Ensure Environmental Sustainability Create a Global Partnership for Development
One Is it getting better, or do you feel the same? Will it make it easier on you, now you got someone to blame? You say one love, one life, when it's one need in the night. One love, we get to share it Leaves you baby if you don't care for it.
Every three seconds… a child dies of extreme poverty. Every eight seconds a child dies of water-borne causes… Three hundred die during the average Sunday sermon… …sixteen hundred during the average Sunday Eucharist.
One, cont. Did I disappoint you or leave a bad taste in your mouth? You act like you never had love and you want me to go without. Well, it's too late tonight to drag the past out into the light. We're one, but we're not the same. We get to carry each other, carry each other... one
One person in seven does not have access to clean drinking water.
One, cont. Have you come here for forgiveness, Have you come to raise the dead Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head Did I ask too much, more than a lot You gave me nothing, now it's all I got. We're one, but we're not the same. Well, we hurt each other, then we do it again.
One, cont. You say love is a temple, love a higher law Love is a temple, love the higher law. You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl And I can't be holding on to what you got, when all you got is hurt.
One, cont. One love, one blood, one life, you got to do what you should. One life with each other: sisters, brothers. One life, but we're not the same. We get to carry each other, carry each other. One, one.
More than 100 million children do not have access to education… 70% of them are girls…
Every year 500 000 women die in childbirth… Thats 1370 every day …or 57 every hour… Together we can change the world… It doesnt have to be this way…

What is one of the most important ways we Christians Stand Up against injustice? How do we seek the sustenance we need as we seek justice for all of Gods children? We Stand Up and we pray… And tonight we join people all around the world who are Standing Up against poverty and Standing Up for the Millennium Development Goals…
Offertory 40 I waited patiently for the Lord. He inclined and heard my cry. He brought me up out of the pit Out of the miry clay. I will sing, sing a new song. I will sing, sing a new song. How long to sing this song? How long to sing this song? How long, how long, how long How long to sing this song?
You set my feet upon a rock And made my footsteps firm. Many will see, many will see and hear. I will sing, sing a new song. I will sing, sing a new song I will sing, sing a new song. I will sing, sing a new song How long to sing this song? How long to sing this song? (repeat)
Prayers of the Faithful Almighty God, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross that he might draw the whole world to himself: Mercifully grant that we, who glory in the mystery of our redemption, may have the grace to take up our cross and follow him in pursuit of your work of reconciliation in the world. We pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.
Let us pray for the poor, hungry, and neglected all over the world, that their cries for daily bread may inspire works of compassion and mercy among those to whom much has been given We pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.
Let us pray for schools and centers of learning throughout the world, for those who lack access to basic education, and for the light of knowledge to blossom and shine in the lives of all Gods people. God of love, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.
Let us pray for an end to the divisions and inequalities that scar Gods creation, particularly the barriers to freedom faced by Gods children throughout the world because of gender; that all who have been formed in Gods image might have equality in pursuit of the blessings of creation. God of love, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.
Let us pray for the health of women, children and families around the world, especially for an end to maternal and child mortality, that in building healthy families, all Gods people may be empowered to strengthen their communities and repair the breaches which divide nations and peoples. We pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer.
Let us pray for an end to pandemic disease throughout the world, particularly the scourges of HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis; that plagues of death may no longer fuel poverty, destabilize nations, and inhibit reconciliation and restoration throughout the world. We pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.
Let us pray for an end to the waste and desecration of Gods creation, for access to the fruits of creation to be shared equally among all people, and for communities and nations to find sustenance in the fruits of the earth and the water God has given us. We pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer
Let us pray for all nations and people who already enjoy the abundance of creation and the blessings of prosperity, that their hearts may be lifted up to the needs of the poor and afflicted, and partnerships between rich and poor for the reconciliation of the world may flourish and grow. We pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.
Let us pray for the departed, particularly those who have died as a result of poverty, hunger, disease, violence, or hardness of the human heart; We pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer.
The Lords Prayer Jesus taught us to call God our Father, and so we have the courage to say, Our Father who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name They kingdom come Thy will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love. --The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Postlude: Where the Streets Have no Name I wanna run, I want to hide I wanna tear down the walls That hold me inside. I wanna reach out And touch the flame Where the streets have no name. I wanna feel sunlight on my face. I see the dust-cloud Disappear without a trace. I wanna take shelter From the poison rain Where the streets have no name Where the streets have no name
Where the Streets Have no Name, cont. Where the streets have no name. We're still building and burning down love Burning down love And when I go there I go there with you (It's all I can do) The city's a flood, and our love turns to rust We're beaten and blown by the wind Trampled in dust I'll show you a place High on a desert plain Where the streets have no name Where the streets have no name
Where the Streets Have no Name, cont. Where the streets have no name We're still building and burning down love Burning down love. And when I go there, I go there with you (It's all I can do) Our love turns to rust Were beaten and blown by the wind, blown by the wind See our love turn to rust Were beaten and blown by the wind, blown by the wind And when I go there, I go there with you (Its all I can do)
