7 South West Public Health Observatory Domestic violence: Immigration status Immigration status may be linked to the perpetrator Spousal visas – 1,000 applications for indefinite leave to stay – 30-50% success Non EEA no resource to public fund. –Survey found 223 requested refuge and only 19 (8.5%) received support (Fellas & Wilkins, 2008)

8 South West Public Health Observatory Domestic Violence: Specialist resource & housing A study of women in refuge accommodation – Women’s Resource Centre – 2007 –Stayed 44 more days longer in specialist refuges –2,300 women turned away because reached capacity –25% recieved council housing after leaving

9 South West Public Health Observatory Domestic Violence: Service delivery issues Thirty second report of the working group with the voluntary sector (2006) –40% no full time staff –36% no paid staff Banga and Gill, 2008 –‘ It had not been about services to suit women and children’s needs, it has been about women and children having to fit services’
