7 MaReS: Main Goal Common Tool of analysis, coordination and identification of opportunities to assumme the sustanaibility challenges, through a strategy based on competitive research and development in the Atlantic European island regions

8 MaReS: Main Objectives 1.Establishment of a strategy to make use and impulse synergies among areas of greater potential and complementarity of the Macaronesian R&D and Innovation systems 2.Prepare the operational basis and start with some examples of the strategy

9 ACTIVITY 1 Operational management, coordinación local coordinatioin at each region and global and local management of finances. ACTIVITY 2 Creation and devolopment of a virtual coordination entity and identification of a common R&D&I strategy to facilitate the identificationj of complementary strategic areas of research, devlopment and innovation in the 3 regions. ACTIVITY 3 Define a common R&D&I plan for the 3 regions, to strengthen the development of research, technology, innovation and society of information. ACTIVITY 4 Promote the mobility of students and researchers among the Macaronesian regions, to increase the collaboration among the researchers of the Institutions present in each region. ACTIVITY 5 Prepare a common Living Lab environment for research and innovation in the identified areas. ACTIVITY 6 Promote MaReS in the global fora of research and knowledge, reinforcing the international position in common interest environments.

19 Developing a Maritime Strategy for the Atlantic Ocean Area (COM(2011) 782 final) “An Atlantic Forum will be set up that will allow Member States, Parliament, regional authorities, civil society and representatives of existing and emerging industries to contribute. It will include a set of workshops focused on the challenges and opportunities outlined above and a think tank to suggest options for achieving the objectives.” Challenges and opportunities grouped in 5 themes  Implementing the ecosystem approach  Reducing Europe's carbon footprint  Sustainable exploitation of the Atlantic seafloor's natural resources  Responding to threats and emergencies  Socially inclusive growth 140 participants, 40 speakers

20 ndex.php?option=com_c ontent&view=article&id= 7:boletines&catid=7:bole tines&Itemid=6 Macaronesian Marine Marítime Bulletin B3M  Appears as a joint initiative of some marine-maritime projects from the first PCT-MAC callPCT-MAC  It is set up as a coomon expression and outreach element, intended to remain beyond the end of the projects that produce it  Constitutes a cooperation mode among the projects and a tool that reinforces the common Macaronesian value in the R&D&I marine-maritime area  The first number was published in April 2010 and 6 numbers have been produced from them (the latest in April 2012)

25 First Net-Biome Joint Call Macaronesian regions need leadership in general: Azores: 19 projects (6 as leader) Canaries: 32 projects (3 as leader) Madeira: 16 projects (0 as leader) ORs and OCTs are mostly islands but the ocean is not very much studied

26 The ORs should head towards growing in an intelligent, sustainable and integrative mode as stated by the UE 2020 Strategy. This should also translate for these regions into an economy more supported by knowledge and innovation, greener and more open to the world.

Research integration renewable energies (wind), offshore aquaculture, maritime transport and recreational activities. Develop an innovative design for a Multi-use Offshore Platform that enables the integration of these activities. Study the new platform’s logistical requirements: security, installation, operation, maintenance, etc. Asses the economic feasibility and viability Develop environmental impact methodology and assessment.
