Airtightness Activities at SP & expectations with a EU network Eva Sikander, SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden
Activities at SP Airtightness during the building process Requiremets – new buildings, reconstruction Guidance to developers Following up Measuremets – airtightness of the whole building envelope - airtightness of a part of the building EN13829 Have also tested CAN/CGSB-149.15 (using the ventilationsystem) Training Designers and contractors (craftsmen) – often in connection to very energy efficient buildings Research – example Durability / in field Durability / laboratory – ongoing Easy to build airtight? Choise of structures to achieve airtight envelopes in a more easy way – massive or lightveight envelopes?
Airtightness requirements and the developers own work Require- ments Designing for airtightness L L L L Detailed drawings and descriptions Documen- tation Critical details Measuremnts Operation for sustainable airtightness A method to ensure airtightness of the building envelope : ByggaL (www.lufttathet.se) Early planning DesignConstructionOperation Routines Checklists Developer Designer Contractor Operator Covers the whole building process
Activities at SP Airtightness of components – in laboratory (not completed) Windows, doors, wallstructures, materials etc ENxxx - Etc Ventilation duct systems (at the manufacturers site) EN12237 (circular) EN1507 (rectangular) Components in ventilation system EN1751 (spjäll and duct) EN13180 (flexible ducts) Etc
Expectations with a EU network General: Exchange of experiences Competent tester schemes Input to testers training Database development Development of requirements Strategies when it comes to big buildings or testing a part of a building
Situation in Sweden Swedish Building Code Requirements concerning energy use, no specific requirements concerning airtightness. The developer has the responsibility to fulfil these requirements The developer have contracts with different actors to make sure that these requirements or even more specific and demanding requirements are fulfilled. The building industry (developers/designers/contractors) have a increasing awareness about the importance of airtight building envelopes!
