62 COMPETENCY GRADE "D" IN MATHEMATICS IN GRADE 5 At this level students are capable of resolving non-routine problems which can be contextualized in more than one component, or in which the information is not organized in such a way as to allow direct modeling (this allows for different approaches to the problem). Students should discover in the problem non-explicit relationships which allows for the identification of a strategy to find the solution. At this level students are able to translate among different representations: icons, graphics, and symbols. They can express in natural language relationships, properties, and patterns. They can argue the why of a procedure or strategy. They can model situations involving addition and multiplication (combinations). They can propose different strategies for the solution of a problem and recognize simple generalizations. COMPETENCY GRADE "E" IN MATHEMATICS IN GRADE 9 At this level students are capable of resolving complex non-routine problems, in which they should discover non-explicit relationships that allows for the establishment of a strategy to find the solution. Theses problems may involve distinct topics of mathematical understanding and require deeper thinking about mathematical concepts. At this level students should be able to construct formal arguments, make generalizations, predict and justify reasoning and conclusions, make conjectures and verify properties, generalize calculation procedures, and describe and represent situations of variation. They can generalize solutions.
