16 Osteopathic Medical Education in the pre-Flexnerian period Flexner identified 8 osteopathic colleges – Chicago (Littlejohn), Des Moines (Still), Kirksville, Kansas City (Central), Philadelphia, Cambridge, and 2 in Los Angeles (Los Angeles and Pacific). Gevitz notes 10 others. 1300 students total (Flexner). Average annual tuition of $160 (Flexner). “The eight osteopathic schools fairly reek with commercialism. Their catalogues are a mass of hysterical exaggerations, alike of the earning and curative power of osteopathy.” (Flexner) One-fifth of osteopathic graduates before 1910 were women.
