The Cognitive Interview Masterclass: Amina Memon, Becky Milne and Nina Westera
Issues in Research n A study space analysis of 65 published studies n To identify gaps in the research n The extent to which research findings are relevant for practice n To set an agenda for future research
STUDY SPACE ANALYSIS Inclusion criteria u CI (original, enhanced or modified version) u A measure of recall
80% HAVE USED VIDEO TAPED EVENTS
Gaps in CI research n Few studies on relevant estimator variables (alcohol, weapon presence, race, emotion, exposure) and delay. n 17% of studies had a delay of 1-2 weeks; only 3% employing a delay of over 2 weeks. The majority (48%) of studies have a delay period between hours and 31% have no delay or a very brief (minutes) delay.
Gaps in CI research n Few studies looking at effects of repeated testing with a CI- a variable of theoretical as well as practical importance n Only five (8%) studies used older adults – given the ageing population, this represents a significant gap in the CI literature
Repeated Interviews n How is eyewitness recall (quality and quantity) influenced over repeat interviews influenced by: (1) The quality of the original interview (1) The quality of the original interview (2) Delay- forgetting increases over time so should a repeated interview be conducted as soon as possible after the initial interview? (2) Delay- forgetting increases over time so should a repeated interview be conducted as soon as possible after the initial interview? (3) Interviewer (same or different) across repeat interviews?
Grain size Hair Colour Clothing 1 – Very coarse Brownish A top 2 - Coarse Brown Kind of cardigan 3 - Fine Dark brown Cardigan with a hoodie 4 – Very fine Auburn brown Cardigan with a hoodie and logo on front
Gaps in CI research n Interviewers in 68% of studies were researchers trained in the use of the CI, while other studies (17%) used students as interviewers. n Only 12% of studies included professional law enforcement as interviewers.
CI & Memory for trauma n Few studies have used emotional arousing events n How effective is the CI for recall of traumatic events? n How soon after a traumatic experience should the CI be used? n Therapeutic value?
Use of CI in the field n Investigative & Evidential Issues
