A Trip to the Land of the dead Odysseus is not alone among the ancient heroes who must descend to the Land of the Dead – Gilgamesh (Sumerian hero) – Theseus – Heracles WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?! – Truly significant voyages in life involve journeys to the deepest parts of ourselves – We must have a confrontations with the darkest reality of all – death
Odysseus and The Land of the Dead Odysseus seeks his destiny Odysseus is going to the Land of the Dead to see Teirêsias: – blind prophet from the city of Thebes – His lack of external sight suggests the presence of TRUE insight (take notice of his in your reading)
What Odysseus Must Do: Odysseus needs to talk to Teirêsias Kirkê told Odysseus exactly what rites he must perform to bring Teirêsias up from the dead Odysseus is speaking… ** Read 31-53, 100-169
Antikleía Now Odysseus meets a familiar ghost… HIS MOM (Antikleía)! – She died of a broken heart when her son failed to return from Troy **Read Lines 228-255
The Afterlife Homer did not envision the afterlife as a happy place The society: – relished the joys, accomplishments, and passions of the physical life – found little pleasure in an eternal life among mere shadows. **The rest of the book contains information about other Greek characters that are trapped or perished, like Perséphonê, Kassandra, Akhilleus, Sísyphos, and Heraklês. Odysseus returns to Kirkê’s island for further instruction
Kirkê is Speaking… She is warning Odysseus of the perils that await him – the forces that would prevent him from achieving his destiny – Mark in your epic poem what she advises. **Read Lines 46-67

The Land of Lord Hêlios, the sun Odysseus’s men are STARVING! – The men disobey Odysseus’s orders to NOT EAT THE CATTLE!!! …They eat the sacred cattle Don’t eat meee!
Zeus is ANGRYYY When Odysseus and his crew set sail, Zeus throws a lightning bolt that destroys the boat ALL the men drown…except Odysseus – Odysseus makes his way back to Kalypso’s island, where we originally met him in book V Odysseus, the storyteller, has now brought us up to date!!!
