Maple Valley Fire LZ Kit Set Up
Ojectives This presentation is intended to provide a guide on how to use, set up, and restore the new LZ kits.
LZ Kit Storage The LZ kits will be placed on Engines 80, 81, and 83. The kits will be stored in the Officer’s upper rear compartment on all three engines
LZ Kit Layout Each LZ kit will include: 5-Red Turboflare lightheads 1-100’ Tape Measure 1-Caribiner (attached to the tape) 1-LZ layout guide
Turboflare Operation Each Turboflare has a switch on the side of the unit Simply press the switch to turn each unit on and off.
Turboflare Maintenance The new Turboflare kits utilize lightheads powered by AA batteries. When the lighthead becomes dim, the 4 AA batteries will require replacement
Turboflare Maintenance To replace the batteries: Remove the 2 screws next to the switch Remove switch cover Remove batteries Replace batteries following diagram on bottom of lighthead Replace cover Check operation
Deployment To set up an LZ: – 1. Choose LZ area – 2. Remove LZ kit from Engine – 3. Place LZ kit in center of LZ
Deployment Setting up LZ (Continued): 4. Remove lightheads and 100’ tape 5. Close and latch storage box lid 6. Connect tape to Kit handle via carabiner
Deployment Setting up LZ (Continued) 7.Walk out appropriate distance for LZ 30 feet for a 60 foot LZ 50 feet for a 100 foot LZ 100 feet for a 200 foot LZ
Deployment 8.Turn on and set down first lighthead 9.Using the tape as a guide, walk a full circle at the appropriate distance from the LZ center, turning on and dropping lightheads as you go.
Deployment When complete, the lightheads should create a ring outlining the proposed LZ.
Reservice When operations are complete: 1. Gather all 5 lightheads 2. Place all 5 lightheads in the storage box in 2 separate stacks as shown
Reservice 3.Fold tape handle into stowed position 4.Store tape on top of lighthead stacks 5.Close and latch lid and replace on engine.
LZ Reminders 1.Contact Airlift on State Ops 1 Line of sight channel May not work until they are close
LZ Reminders 2.Give LZ Report Standard LZ’s have report in LZ book Follow similar template if landing at non-standard location: Dimensions Surface Hazards Special
LZ Reminders 3.Report Airlift’s safe landing to dispatch 4.Assist with patient packaging and loading 5.Report Airlift’s departure Watch for rotor wash debris during take off and landings!
Other Uses Turboflares were originally designed as an alternative to incendiary flares. Besides LZ set ups, they can be used for any purpose you would use a flare for such as marking driveways or traffic control
Other Uses Along with the new LZ kits, we are also adding one lighthead to A80, A81, and A83 to provide a safer, faster, more efficient way to mark problem driveways during responses. Simply push the button and place on the ground to mark the driveway.
Conclusion The new Turboflare landing zone kits are very similar to the current kit we operate While its primary purpose is LZ set up, feel free to use them for any use you see fit
