What to do with your new Beginner English Language Learner !
“I just found out that I’m getting a new student and he doesn’t speak English. What am I going to do?”

Help is on the way! Every effort will be made to support you in class support from a teacher’s aide when possible pre-teaching and re-teaching in the ESL classroom additional resources collaboration to modify assignments and curriculum
What can I expect from this student? Be on time for class Bring regular supplies (pencil, notebook, text) ATTEMPT to follow what others are doing ATTEMPT to copy notes from the board This may even be challenging as they are copying words that they do not even know In some cases, they are learning a new alphabet
How do I communicate? SMILE – it’s universal Speak slowly Use few words for face to face interactions Gestures Pictures Find a Buddy Wait time – at least 3 seconds Technology – Translation websites Another student who may speak the same language
What are my responsibilities? Comprehensible Input Modify and Accommodate reduce amount of work decide on the most important concepts Inclusion keep student engaged with classroom activities Replace assignments Eliminate some assignments
What can I do in my classroom? Varied Activities Visuals Anything that you can show that will help them understand! Gestures and Modeling show – don’t tell Graphic Organizers Realia fancy word for Props Objects from real life used in the classroom
Grading ELLs must be graded using the same grading system as all other students. Focus on the Process and not the Product Quality not Quantity Special grading rubric
