**Basic Units of Measure Length Meter Stick Meter m Mass Balance Gram**

Measurement Tool Unit of measure Abbreviation Length Meter Stick Meter m Mass Balance Gram Kilogram g kg Volume Graduated Cylinder Liter milliliter l ml

3
**Metric Prefixes Prefix Value Example Milli- 1/1000 Millimeter**

(1/1000 of a meter) Centi- 1/100 Centimeter (1/100 of a meter) Deci- 1/10 Decimeter (1/10 of a meter) Base Unit Base unit Meter, liter, gram Deca- 10 Decameter (10 meters) Hecto- 100 Hectometer (100 meters) Kilo- 1000 Kilogram (1000 grams)

4
**Memory Tool Kilo Hecto Deca Deci Centi milli**

Remembering Prefixes from largest to smallest…. Think of your own sentence!! Kilo Hecto Deca (base) Deci Centi milli 1000 100 10 1/10 1/100 1/1000 Kids Have Dropped Dead Converting metrics

5
Converting To convert a smaller unit to a larger unit, move the decimal place to the left for each power of 10 difference between the two measurements or divide. For example: to convert from millimeter to meter move the decimal place 3 to the left because 1 meter is 103 times larger than 1 millimeter 35.0 mm = m To convert from a larger unit of measure to a smaller unit of measure; multiply or move the decimal place to the right one place for each power of 10 difference between the two units of measure. 0.035m = 35.0 mm

6
**Conversion Practice Kilo Hecto Deka Base unit Deci Centi Milli**

Small to Large Practice 200 mg = _______g 15 mL = _____ l 25 cm = ______ m Hint: Move decimal place to the left or divide Large to small Practice 10 g = _______ mg 12km = ______ m 25 l = ______ml Hint: Move decimal place to the right or multiply
