Overview of Service-Learning Development Overall LSC-Tomball student population 8,000+ SL answers to Academic VP; Coordinator = 1 release Developed SL faculty from 3 to 25 per semester Increased student SL hours to 5000+ per semester Provided est. $500,000 to Tomball area since 2002 Impacted students in all academic divisions Achieved national recognition (2007 Honor Roll)
Emergency Response Simulator Responding to campus/community emergency scenarios—fire, flood, tornado, campus shooter Driven by Computer Game Design and Vocational Nursing programs Partnered with local medical clinic, campus police, CERT team, Fac. Senate
Civic Engagement Simulator Develops understanding of political process Focused on Texas elections/issues User must get elected, pass immigration bill Partnered with local HS student governments, candidates for state representative, NPOs Driven by Computer Game Design program aided by indirect service-learning projects
The Service-Learning Classroom Hurricane Ike Recovery Fall 2008—Food and book drives, coastal cleanup, working with community assistance ministries Spring 2009—Focus on local NPOs to help with shift in charitable giving.
