Teaching the Common Core Standards in Mathematics March 29, 2012 Michael Lecker, Programs and Services, mlecker@bucksiu.org

AGENDA 1. Mathematical Practice Standards 2. K-5 Progression: 3 Content Standards 3. Instructional Implications 4. Model Lesson 5. Development of Ideas

Overview of the Common Core www3.bucksiu.org/mathcc

8 Mathematical Practice Standards Practices In table groups – each person select ONE mathematical practice standard. 1.Read your standard. 2.Identify key phrases from the standard to share with others. 3.Discuss with your table the 8 mathematical practice standards.

Progression for the Common Core Content Standards Breakout Session #1 Operations and Algebraic Thinking Groups A, B, C, D Numbers and Operations in Base 10 Groups E, F, G, H Measurement and Data Groups I, J, K Activity #1: Individual Grade Level Reading/Notes Activity #2: K-5 Group Dialogue on the Progression through the Grades

Grade Level Configurations: What are the grade level responsibilities for each Content Standard? Breakout Session #2 Operations and Algebraic Thinking Numbers and Operations in Base 10 Measurement and Data

How does this effect instructional practice? An understanding of conceptual mathematics

Observational Notes

What Fraction of this Shape is Red? www3.bucksiu.org/mathcc

Model Lesson 1. Observation of Teacher: instructional practice 2. Observation of Students: evidence of engagement

Creation of an Lesson Design 1.With grade level colleagues, select one content standard. 2.Design a lesson resource that utilizes mathematical practice standard(s). (power point, lesson plan, problem solving activity) 3. We will conclude with mini presentations sharing.

Gallery Walk Through Lesson Resources 1. Listen to another presentation from your grade level. 2. Jot a comment(s); be specific about its content – reference content standards or practice standard; leave the comment on the table. 3. Go to a new presentation - either one grade level below/above. (Repeat..) 4. Go to a third presentation of your choice … (if time allows) 5. Journey back to your presentation. Read your comments.

District Debrief 1.How does this impact your class? 2.How does this impact your school? 3.How does this impact your organization? 4.Next steps? Dialogue Next Steps IU Support

Providing Feedback: Survey
