What are we going to use today? Today we will use a colon to separate hours and minutes and to introduce a list.

What do we know about telling time? It has numbers and two little dots in the middle. Those little dots are called colons!

Colons : Today we will use colons to separate hours and minutes. We will also use colons to introduce a list. Let’s take a look at this!

Using colons with time Use a colon between the hour and the minutes when writing the time in numerals. Between numbers in time A colon is used between the parts of a number which indicates time. Examples: The race begins at 1:30 P.M. The train will arrive at 6:42 P.M.

Time The clock here shows that it is 4 in the afternoon. We write this using a colon. The correct way of writing this is 4:00 pm.

Some more time This clock shows that it is 1 in the afternoon and 54 minutes. We write this as 1:54 pm.

How about lists? Use a colon before a list of items, especially after expressions such as the following and as follows. A colon is used to introduce a list. Examples: Here's what I want you to do: grab my bag, warm up the car, and take me to the station. When you go to the exam, take these items: paper, pencil, and an eraser.

Here’s another example Make sure that you come prepared to school daily. The materials you should bring to school include: pencils, pens, notebook, paper, and backpack.
