1 HYSWEEP® Overview

2 HYSWEEP® Overview Full Coverage Survey of a DC3.
S/V Bufe - USACE Sault Ste. Marie Area Office

3 Multibeam vs. Single Beam
The Good: Saves time: Multibeam provides high resolution and full coverage of the seafloor. The data is more accurate for volume computations. The Bad: More data to work with and more time to process. With additional sensors needed, there are more error sources. The Ugly: Plane is lost entirely in single beam contours. Example of using a Multibeam where previous work was with single beam sonar. An Obstruction was easily missed

4 Multibeam Sonar Types Beamforming Systems: Interferometric Systems:
Forms beams using an array of transducer elements. Each beam has a Maximum Response Angle, giving the direction of the beam. Seabat 8101 Atlas Fansweep 20 Interferometric Systems: AKA bathymetric sidescan. Forms beams from phase angle of backscatter. Ross Sweep System Multiple Transducer Systems: Widely spaced transducers pointing down. 4

5 Support Sensors Heading: Sound Speed Sensor & Profiler:
Using a gyro or dual GPS antenna array. Sound Speed Sensor & Profiler: Sensor: Sound speed at sonar head. Profiler: Sound speed through water column. Motion reference (MRU): Measures boat heave, pitch and roll. 5

8 HYSWEEP® Driver Reference
Motion / Heading / Other Sensors: Applanix: POS/MV, WaveMaster. Coda Octopus: F180. IXSEA: OCTANS. JAE: JM7531. KVH: Gyrotrac. Novatel: SPAN Odim: MVP (Moving Velocity Profiler - HYPACK Survey driver). Seatex: MRUx. SG Brown: 1000S. TSS: 335B, DMS. *** - Other sensors available via the generic and NMEA drivers. 8

9 Pole Mount: Over the Side
Installation Pole Mount: Bow Pole Mount: Over the Side Moon Pool Sonar mounting (in order of preference): Hull mount at boat CG. Moon pool at boat CG. Pole mount; bow or over the side. Motion Sensor: Mount at boat CG. Alternate location: As close as possible to boat CG. 9

10 Multibeam systems need calibration!
Calibration Tools Multibeam systems need calibration! HYSWEEP® Patch Test Pitch, roll and yaw alignment. Find out EXACTLY where the sonar is pointing. Account for GPS latency if needed. HYSWEEP® Bar Check Much like single beam - verify draft measurement. Why we need to patch test. Bar check window. 10

11 Survey Preparation Planned Survey Lines Coverage Matrix
Make parallel lines spaced for target coverage. Sometimes difficult with multibeam - coverage changes with depth. Coverage Matrix Alternative to planned lines. “Paint the Bottom” until there are no gaps. Large depth changes make line planning difficult. Alternative is “Painting the Bottom”. 11

12 HYSWEEP® Survey Features Refraction Errors seen in real time
Data collection and logging. Targeting and coverage mapping. TPU and other QC checks visible in 16 real time dislays HYSWEEP® 3-D Seafloor Refraction Errors seen in real time Refraction occurs at changes in sound velocity. Errors when SV profile doesn’t match conditions – estuaries can be troublesome. Look for smiling or frowning sweeps. Same take-off angle, different ray paths. You don’t want to see this profile when the bottom is flat. 12

13 Multibeam Post Processing
In HYSWEEP® Corrections / Review / Edit with MBMAX32 or MBMAX64 editors. Tide and sound speed corrections. Graphical data review. Manual and automatic data cleaning. Automated data cleaning with CUBE. Sweep editing window. After MBMAX, Back Into HYPACK® Sounding Selection: MAPPER gridding program and DATA REDUCTION program to minimize number of XYZ points. Modeling, volumes, sections, contours with HYPACK® TIN MODEL. Editing and viewing with CLOUD Visualization and fly through with HYPACK® 3DTV. 13
