Firewalls What are Firewalls? Firewall Components Benefits of using a firewall Firewall Products Issues and Problems with Firewalls
What are Firewalls? A firewall can be regarded as security system to protect a networked server or computer from intentional or accidental damage or unauthorized access.
Why Firewalls? 1. Isolating internal and external traffic 2. Making internal addresses invisible and directly inaccessible from outside and passing through authorized traffic after proper checking a proxy service 3. Facilitating protected (encrypted) connections to cooperative parties over public networks 4. Filtering outgoing traffic for security and network usage rules 5. Filtering incoming traffic for rogue data or improper actions 6. Blocking forbidden external services or addresses 7. Providing log-in services for authorized outside users and simulating the approved outside user as an inside user 8. Caching network traffic 9. Converting between different network protocols on different protocol levels 10. Traffic diverting 11. Providing consistent, open entry to the internal network and facilitating public network address and connection sharing
