ENGAGE: Biology A

Communicating Like a Scientist The riddle activity required cooperation. You will continue to develop and use cooperation skills throughout this class. You will also develop other skills of working like a scientist, such as strong communication habits. One of the most important jobs for a scientist is to accurately record ideas and data to share with other scientists and the public.

Cooperating Like A Scientist Like a scientist, you will keep a scientific journal throughout this course. The accuracy with which you describe events in your journal is important because this will enable you to compare your observations with those of others and serve as a record of your learning.

Your Journal 1. A scientific journal helps scientists communicate with others. 2. Allows peers and public to review their work. 3. Makes it possible for scientists to repeat. This replication process is essential for validity In class 1. Your classmates and your teacher depend on you to keep accurate records 2. Recorded results can be effectively analyzed. 3. Credit will be given for a well organized journal

Task -1: Receive, Observe, & Draw 1. Your teacher will send you a photo. 2. You must observe the photo and then draw your interpretation of the photo one of two ways: 1. Using pencils, crayons, markers, etc. 2. by using a computer program. 3. The drawing of your observations MUST be generated by YOU the student. TASK 1. Receive a photo from your teacher 2. Observe— look closely at the photo 3. Interpret the photo & draw YOUR interpretation 4. Post in Forum AND Send to your teacher

Task -1 Post Your Drawing & Send 1. Post the drawing in the discussion board You will have to get the drawing electronically to the discussion board. You can: scan it, take a photo with your phone and email it to yourself or someone who can save it Take a photo with a digital camera 2. Send it to your instructor in an inter- district mail envelope.(to: T. Huber at SHS)  you are smart, I know you’ll find a way! TASK 1. Receive a photo from your teacher 2. Observe— look closely at the photo 3. Interpret the photo & draw YOUR interpretation 4. Post in Forum AND Send to your teacher

Reflection Reflection In your journal 1. How did your previous experience of either having seen or not having seen an object like this influence your drawing or guessing? 2. Are scientific observations completely objective? “Objective” means without bias or free of preconceived ideas. TASK 1. Receive a photo from your teacher 2. Observe— look closely at the photo 3. Interpret the photo & draw YOUR interpretation 4. Post in Forum AND Send to your teacher
