CGF Industry Briefing Day 24 th October 2006 © Dstl 2006 Dstl is part of the Ministry of Defence Background - Training Many UK Training Systems are major users of CGF as facilitators to achieving the training objective - –Command & Staff Trainer, Combined Arms Tactics Trainer, Battlegroup C2 Trainer, Warrior OPV, etc. –Medium Support Helicopter, Apache, Lynx, Merlin, etc. –Typhoon, Tornado, Nimrod, Hercules, etc. –Maritime Warfare School, etc. Also core to the future Joint & Collective Training systems in the UK –Air “MTDS”, Maritime “MCTS”, & Land “NET-C” initiatives
CGF Industry Briefing Day 24 th October 2006 © Dstl 2006 Dstl is part of the Ministry of Defence Background - Research UK MOD has a long history of sponsoring CGF research Continues to sponsor CGF research activities –Improving Human Behavioural Representation in CGF, improved visualisation & control of CGF, etc. –CGF “Special Interest Group” with UK Industry UK continues to be extensive users of the ModSAF family of CGF systems –Using & developing ModSAF & its derivatives since mid-1990’s –Contributed to the development of JSAF as part of the US/UK “Synthetic Theater Of War” (STOW) programme –Maintain UK-baseline versions –Also used extensively to support War Fighter Experimentation, procurement support, concept development, etc.
CGF Industry Briefing Day 24 th October 2006 © Dstl 2006 Dstl is part of the Ministry of Defence Problem space – Diversity of CGF in use Very diverse set of CGF systems in use across the UK –ITEMS, ModSAF, ExportCGF, VR-Forces, STAGE, FLAMES, StarForce, MTWS, ABACUS, … Lack of CGF standards makes migration of … –entity performance models/data –entity behaviour descriptions –C2/C4ISTAR interfaces –scenarios –terrain representations –etc.... between CGF systems very challenging; it is not practical to maintain a consistent representation across these systems Differences in modelling approaches, mainly in underlying assumptions, can limit the practical interoperability between different CGF systems
CGF Industry Briefing Day 24 th October 2006 © Dstl 2006 Dstl is part of the Ministry of Defence Problem space – New Equipment & Concepts New & disruptive technologies & concepts –Introduction of new equipment (e.g. Eurofighter Typhoon, Type 45 Destroyer, Watchkeeper UAV & other ISTAR systems, etc.) will have a major impact on how we operate in the future (bottom-up changes) –Introduction of new operational concepts (e.g. Effects Based Approach, NEC/NCW/NCO, etc.) will similarly have a large impact on how we operate (top-down changes) These changes will have a pervasive impact on our approach to training, and will need to be represented across most of our training systems –almost every entity, in every CGF system, will need to be modified –many CGF systems cannot support some of the new equipment or concepts without major development of their core architectures
CGF Industry Briefing Day 24 th October 2006 © Dstl 2006 Dstl is part of the Ministry of Defence Current Situation – New Uses Growing user base for CGF systems, outside of traditional training community, with new needs : –War Fighting Experimentation (WFE) –Procurement –Test & Evaluation, etc. UK MOD recognise the need for a more coordinated & coherent (& affordable) approach to the use of CGF systems –as part of a larger scale modelling & simulation rationalisation initiative
CGF Industry Briefing Day 24 th October 2006 © Dstl 2006 Dstl is part of the Ministry of Defence UK Strategy for CGF use Consolidate on a “small number” of managed CGF systems (with supporting tools, data, processes, etc.), & make available for use across all MOD programmes Further - –Improve CGF awareness through workshops, briefings, symposia, courses, etc.; –Establish a stakeholder community and engage them in working towards a workable solution; –Develop a testbed for managing common CGF systems for pan-MOD use; –Identify capability gaps & sponsor research to address them.

OneSAF is seen to be a prime candidate for the “pool of common CGF systems” Key characteristics that make it very attractive : –‘Open Source’ approach –Composibility –Supporting tools & interfaces –Ability to move between real-time & as-fast-as-possible –Adherence to & development of standards –Scale & diversity of potential user community, including other friendly nations (esp. ‘ABCA’) –Cost & “licensing” model
